Jemez Mountains: Volcanic Hot Springs and Redrock Canyons
An hour north of Albuquerque, the Jemez Mountains are a collapsed volcanic caldera (the Valles Caldera, the second largest volcanic caldera in the United States) surrounded by the Santa Fe National Forest's red rock canyon country. The Jemez Springs corridor on SR 4 passes Soda Dam (a massive natural travertine dam across the Jemez River created by mineral spring deposits), Jemez Historic Site (a 14th-century Pueblo village with a 17th-century Spanish mission), hot spring pools at Jemez Springs Bath House, and the redrock slot canyon at Zuni-Coyote Trail. The Valles Caldera National Preserve beyond the mountains gives access to the 13-mile volcanic bowl with bison-sized meadows, elk herds, and the most remote landscape accessible from Albuquerque.
