Appalachian Trail Gateway: Amicalola Falls, Blood Mountain & Tallulah Gorge

Three days on North Georgia's section of the Blue Ridge — where the Appalachian Trail begins its 2,190-mile run to Maine and the mountain terrain concentrates some of the most dramatic scenery in the eastern Appalachians within a two-hour drive of Atlanta. Amicalola Falls State Park protects the 729-foot cascade that marks the traditional start of thru-hikes; the AT Approach Trail from the falls leads 8.5 miles to Springer Mountain (the official AT southern terminus). Blood Mountain (4,458 ft) is the highest point on the AT in Georgia. Tallulah Gorge's 1,000-foot canyon and its pedestrian suspension bridge close the circuit on day three.

Day 1 — Amicalola Falls (729 ft, tallest waterfall east of the Mississippi), AT Approach Trail, overnight Dawsonville areaDay 2 — Blood Mountain Trail from Neels Gap (4,458 ft, highest AT point in Georgia), Vogel State Park, overnight DahlonegaDay 3 — Tallulah Gorge SP (1,000-ft gorge, suspension bridge, Hurricane Falls), return Atlanta

The tallest cascading waterfall east of the Mississippi River — 729 feet total drop in a series of cascades that plunge down a granite face before converging in a pool at the base. The East Ridge Trail (0.5 miles) climbs directly alongside the falls to a summit overlook above the top cascade; the West Ridge Trail provides a return loop through hardwood forest. 'Amicalola' is a Cherokee word meaning 'tumbling water.' The park's lodge sits above the falls; the visitor center at the base of the falls is the start of the 8.5-mile Approach Trail to Springer Mountain — the official southern terminus of the Appalachian Trail, where every northbound thru-hike begins.

4.9
The first 5 miles of the Appalachian Trail Approach Trail from the Amicalola Falls visitor center toward Springer Mountain — well-graded switchbacks through second-growth hardwood forest with regular signage marking the distance to Springer. The trail is the starting point of every successful AT thru-hike and the foot traffic shows: the path is heavily worn in the first section, and trailhead registers from the past decades show the scale of use. Turning back at the 2-3 mile mark gives a meaningful out-and-back without committing to the full 8.5-mile approach.

Dawsonville, GA is 8 miles from Amicalola Falls — a small mountain town known as the 'City of Speed' (birthplace of NASCAR champion Bill Elliott and the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame). The Georgia Racing Hall of Fame Museum on the town square is the most distinctive stop; the surrounding area has apple orchards and farm stands that are open September through November. The lodge at Amicalola Falls State Park sits on a ridge above the falls with views toward the Blue Ridge.

The Georgia State Parks lodge above the falls — 57 rooms in a ridge-top building with views of the surrounding North Georgia mountains, a restaurant, and direct access to the trail network in the park. Staying at the lodge places you at the trailhead for the following morning's early start toward Blood Mountain. The Hike Inn (4.9 miles into the Approach Trail, accessible only on foot) is the alternative for those wanting a deeper wilderness experience.

The highest point on the Appalachian Trail in Georgia — Blood Mountain (4,458 ft) reached via the 4.4-mile round-trip Blood Mountain Loop from Neels Gap (US-19/129). The trail climbs through a transition zone from northern hardwood forest to a high-elevation heath bald where blueberry and mountain laurel cover the upper slopes. The 1934 Civilian Conservation Corps stone shelter at the summit is the oldest AT shelter in Georgia, with an exposed granite summit giving views over the Chattahoochee National Forest. Neels Gap (3,125 ft) is the only place where the AT passes directly through a building — the Mountain Crossings outfitter, which has occupied the 1937 Walasi-Yi Inn since 1975 and serves as an essential resupply point for AT thru-hikers.

4.8
One of Georgia's oldest state parks (1931, CCC-built) — a glacial lake (Lake Trahlyta) surrounded by mountain hemlock and rhododendron, with the 4-mile Bear Hair Gap Trail climbing through old-growth forest to a gap with Blue Ridge views, then descending through a creek valley back to the lake. The lake swimming (Memorial Day through Labor Day) is one of the coolest natural swimming options in Georgia at 3,500 feet elevation; the CCC-era stone structures around the park are among the best preserved in Georgia.

Dahlonega was the site of the first major US gold rush — gold was discovered here in 1828, 21 years before the California rush, and the Dahlonega Mint operated from 1838 to 1861, producing over $6 million in gold coins. The Gold Museum in the 1836 Lumpkin County Courthouse tells the story of the rush, the Cherokee displacement it accelerated (the Cherokee gold fields were a central driver of the Indian Removal Act), and the mining techniques used. The town square has mountain craft galleries, North Georgia wine tasting rooms (the Blue Ridge wine trail begins here), and good evening dining.

A landmark inn and family-style restaurant in downtown Dahlonega — the Smith House has operated since 1922, serving fixed-price Southern family-style meals with fried chicken, country ham, and a dozen side dishes. The inn rooms are simple and comfortable; the restaurant is the reason to stay. Tomorrow's drive to Tallulah Gorge takes 45 minutes east on US-19 and US-23.

Tallulah Gorge — South Rim Trail
4.8
The deepest gorge in the eastern United States — Tallulah Gorge drops 1,000 feet in less than a mile, with the Tallulah River falling through six major waterfalls in sequence within the canyon. The South Rim Trail (3.0 miles) runs along the gorge rim with overlooks at each major viewpoint: Lover's Leap overlook, the Slide Show waterfall view, and Hurricane Falls overlook at the canyon's deepest section. The gorge was a significant tourist destination from the 1830s through 1913, when a dam was built at the gorge's head — the current state park releases water for whitewater kayaking on some spring and fall weekends.

Tallulah Gorge Suspension Bridge — Gorge Floor Permit
Tallulah Gorge Suspension Bridge — Gorge Floor Permit
5
A 270-foot suspension bridge across the gorge at the 80-foot level above the Tallulah River — the bridge gives the only direct view of the gorge walls from within the canyon. Access to the gorge floor is by permit only (100 permits per day, available at the visitor center first-come first-served); the permit trail descends 310 wooden steps and a series of ladders to the river level at Hurricane Falls, where the Tallulah River drops 96 feet in a confined chasm. The permit system controls erosion on the steep descent; arriving at the visitor center when it opens (8am) secures a floor permit on busy days.

Tallulah Falls Village & Lake Rabun
4.5
The small community of Tallulah Falls above the gorge — a former 19th-century resort town that drew health-seekers and Gilded Age vacationers to the gorge's edge before the dam eliminated the roar of the falls. A few original resort-era buildings survive in the village. Lake Rabun (10 minutes north) is a mountain lake with a public beach and boat ramp in the Chattahoochee National Forest — a good final stop before the 2-hour drive back to Atlanta on US-441 south through Cornelia and I-985.
