Cheaha Summit & Little River Canyon

Two of the best active destinations in Alabama back to back: Cheaha Mountain on day one for summit trails and ridge views, and Little River Canyon National Preserve on day two for canyon rim hiking and waterfall exploration. Cheaha at 2,413 feet is the state high point in the Talladega National Forest; Little River Canyon 45 minutes northeast of Cheaha contains one of the deepest river gorges east of the Mississippi, with the Little River running 12 miles along the canyon floor before dropping over DeSoto Falls. The two sites together cover the full scope of Alabama's Appalachian landscape — summit ridgeline and river canyon — over a route that builds naturally from one to the other without backtracking. Overnight at the CCC-era Cheaha Resort puts you on the mountain for the morning departure to the canyon.

Day 1 — Cheaha: Bald Rock boardwalk, Pulpit Rock trail, Lake Cheaha swim, summit overnightDay 2 — Little River Canyon: Canyon Rim Trail, DeSoto Falls, return drive to Birmingham

The summit boardwalk through a boulder heath to exposed Hillabee granite at 2,380 feet — the most accessible high-elevation viewpoint in Alabama, with long views across the Talladega ridgeline. The mountain laurel and sandstone boulder field are characteristic Southern Appalachian high-country landscape.

A 1.5-mile round-trip trail to a sandstone outcrop on the southern face of Cheaha — views across the Hillabee Creek drainage and the ridgelines running south toward the Coosa Valley. More rugged than the boardwalk, with a proper trail climb through hardwood forest before the exposed rock at the summit.

The Alabama State Parks lodge on the Cheaha summit — stone and timber construction from the 1930s Civilian Conservation Corps era, at 2,413 feet with ridge views from the dining room. The most atmospheric overnight option in the Birmingham area's accessible mountains; book well ahead as it fills on weekends.

5
A rim trail above one of the deepest river gorges east of the Mississippi — the Little River carved a canyon 600 feet deep through Lookout Mountain's Pennsylvanian sandstone plateau, running the full 12 miles of the preserve. The rim trail stays close to the canyon edge with views down to the river and across the sandstone walls. The preserve is nationally managed but sees a fraction of the traffic of comparable Eastern canyon landscapes.

DeSoto Falls
DeSoto Falls
4.8
A 104-foot waterfall on the Little River at the upper end of the canyon — the river drops over a horseshoe sandstone ledge into the gorge below in the most dramatic single drop in the preserve. A viewing platform is a short walk from the parking area; the full plunge view requires descending the observation stairs to the base.
