The bronze fisherman at the helm on Stacy Boulevard, installed in 1925, is the symbol of Gloucester's 400-year fishing tradition — the inscription 'They That Go Down to the Sea in Ships' commemorates the 10,000 fishermen lost from this port since colonial times. The red fishing shack on Bradley Wharf in Rockport Harbor has been the most-painted and most-photographed subject in American art since the 1930s — the name derives from an art instructor who dismissed a student's painting of it as 'just another motif No. 1.' The original shack was destroyed in the Blizzard of 1978 and rebuilt to the exact specifications from photographs.
