Gallatin Canyon & Spanish Peaks Wilderness

Two days using the Gallatin River canyon as the spine of a south-trending active circuit — the canyon itself is one of the most scenic mountain drives in Montana, a 40-mile river corridor between limestone canyon walls where the Gallatin River drops continuously from its Yellowstone headwaters. The Spanish Peaks Wilderness (part of the Lee Metcalf Wilderness complex) on the west side of the canyon above Big Sky provides the first day's active objective: a strenuous out-and-back to the Spanish Lakes at 8,800 feet through old-growth spruce and fir forest. The second day returns via the Hyalite Canyon drainage for a Hyalite Peak summit or a more moderate canyon waterfall circuit before the 25-minute return to Bozeman.

Spanish Peaks Trail — Lee Metcalf Wilderness
A strenuous 10-mile round trip into the Spanish Peaks portion of the Lee Metcalf Wilderness — one of the least-visited wilderness areas in the Gallatin area despite being 45 minutes from Bozeman. The trail climbs through old-growth Engelmann spruce and subalpine fir to the Spanish Lakes cirque at 8,800 feet, ringed by the limestone walls of the Spanish Peaks above. The wilderness designation (1983) prohibits motorized equipment; the old-growth forest in the lower section is exceptionally well-preserved.

Spanish Lakes — Cirque Lunch
Two cirque lakes at 8,800 feet in the Spanish Peaks Wilderness — Lower Spanish Lake and Upper Spanish Lake, separated by a short section of alpine meadow. The lakes reflect the limestone peaks above; native cutthroat and westslope cutthroat trout inhabit both lakes. The surrounding meadows above the lakes transition to the Spanish Peaks summits (11,000+ feet) via off-trail travel for those wanting an additional alpine objective.

The afternoon return drive through the Gallatin Canyon on US-191 — 40 miles of river corridor between limestone canyon walls where whitewater kayakers and rafters run the river in summer. The canyon filmed scenes for A River Runs Through It (1992, starring Brad Pitt). Pulloffs along the river provide access to wade fishing; the canyon narrows significantly at Gallatin Gateway with dramatic vertical walls.

A lodge and restaurant in the Gallatin Canyon corridor 1 mile from the Big Sky resort turn — a long-established backcountry guide operation turned full-service lodge with a noted restaurant. Buck's T-4 has been hosting Gallatin Canyon backcountry hunters and hikers since 1946; the restaurant is one of the best in the canyon corridor. Positioned between the Spanish Peaks Wilderness and the Hyalite Canyon trailhead for the next day.

A 9.3-mile round trip from the Hyalite Reservoir to Hyalite Lake — a moderate alpine hike ascending 2,400 feet through the waterfall-rich upper canyon, past Hyalite Falls (120 feet), past Grotto Falls and Arch Falls, to the cirque lake at 9,120 feet. The trail passes all twelve named waterfalls in the canyon on the way to the lake; Hyalite Lake itself is framed by the ridgeline above the canyon with the Gallatin Range visible to the south.

Hyalite Reservoir on the descent — a dam-created lake at 6,647 feet with the Gallatin Range peaks reflected in the calm water. The reservoir is popular for kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding; kayak rental operates seasonally from the lower trailhead. A picnic table area at the reservoir dam provides a lunch spot before the short drive back to Bozeman.
