🌿 RelaxedWeekend · from Chattanooga, TN

Signal Mountain & Tennessee River Gorge

Signal Mountain sits directly above Chattanooga on the north rim of the Tennessee River Gorge — a high residential plateau 1,600 feet above the city with the best elevated views of the Moccasin Bend meander and the river gorge below. The Tennessee River Gorge Trust's Pot Point Nature Center at the bottom of the gorge gives the reverse perspective: a river-level view of the 1,000-foot sandstone walls and the wild gorge interior that is almost invisible from the city above. Day one is Signal Mountain's scenic overlooks and the Nickajack Cave Wildlife Refuge 30 miles west, where 150,000 gray bats exit a river-mouth cave at dusk in one of the most unusual wildlife spectacles in the mid-South. Day two descends into the gorge itself for a flat trail walk and a morning on the Tennessee River before the return.

Day 1 — Signal Mountain overlooks (Moccasin Bend views), Nickajack Cave bat flight at dusk (150,000 gray bats), overnightDay 2 — Tennessee River Gorge Trust trails, Pot Point Nature Center, return to Chattanooga

Signal Mountain — Moccasin Bend Overlook
The north rim of the Tennessee River Gorge above Chattanooga — a series of roadside overlook points accessible from Signal Mountain Boulevard with 900-foot views down to the Tennessee River's Moccasin Bend meander. The bend is a 4-mile arc of the Tennessee River almost completely enclosed by the ridge; the view from the north rim is the most commonly reproduced landscape image of the Chattanooga area. Moccasin Bend is a designated National Historic Landmark for its thousands of years of human occupation.

A US Fish & Wildlife Service wildlife refuge at the mouth of Nickajack Cave on the Tennessee River — one of the most important gray bat hibernation and maternity colonies in the United States. From late spring through September, approximately 100,000-150,000 gray bats (federally endangered) emerge from the cave entrance at dusk in a continuous 20-30 minute stream visible from the viewing platform. One of the most unusual wildlife spectacles accessible from Chattanooga, and entirely free.

A hotel in South Pittsburg, TN — the nearest town to Nickajack Cave, on the Tennessee River corridor west of Chattanooga. The town is home to Lodge Manufacturing (makers of Lodge cast iron cookware since 1896) and a small but genuine downtown. Positioned for the morning return to the Tennessee River Gorge Trust area before the return to Chattanooga.

The Tennessee River Gorge Trust's river-level visitor center at the bottom of the gorge — a conservation organization protecting 20,000 acres of the gorge interior. The center sits at the river's edge with flat walking trails along the shore; the 1,000-foot sandstone walls of the gorge are visible from both sides of the river. The gorge interior sees very few visitors compared to the Lookout Mountain attractions above.

Tennessee River Gorge Trail
Tennessee River Gorge Trail
4.9
A flat riverside trail through the gorge interior on the south bank of the Tennessee River — the most peaceful walking environment in the Chattanooga area, with the gorge walls rising above and the river flowing alongside. The trail accesses several river access points for swimming and sitting; the forest in the gorge is undisturbed old-growth in several sections. The quiet here is striking given its proximity to a mid-sized city.
