Barr Trail to Barr Camp & Royal Gorge
Two demanding active days in opposite terrain types — the vertical world of Barr Trail on Pikes Peak on day one, and the deep canyon of the Royal Gorge on day two. Barr Trail is the primary hiking route up Pikes Peak (14,115 feet), a 13-mile one-way trail gaining 7,815 feet from Manitou Springs to the summit; the full summit-and-back is a 26-mile, 12-hour day. The two-day version uses Barr Camp at mile 6.5 and elevation 10,200 feet as the turnaround — a 13-mile round trip gaining 3,800 feet, which is a substantial but achievable full day. Barr Camp was established in 1921 by Fred Barr, who built the trail by hand; it operates as a backcountry shelter and hostel. The Royal Gorge on day two is the deepest royal gorge in the United States — a 1,000-foot deep canyon cut by the Arkansas River through Precambrian granite with a bridge spanning it 1,053 feet above the river (one of the highest suspension bridges in the world).
