🥾 ActiveWeekend · from Colorado Springs, CO

Barr Trail to Barr Camp & Royal Gorge

Two demanding active days in opposite terrain types — the vertical world of Barr Trail on Pikes Peak on day one, and the deep canyon of the Royal Gorge on day two. Barr Trail is the primary hiking route up Pikes Peak (14,115 feet), a 13-mile one-way trail gaining 7,815 feet from Manitou Springs to the summit; the full summit-and-back is a 26-mile, 12-hour day. The two-day version uses Barr Camp at mile 6.5 and elevation 10,200 feet as the turnaround — a 13-mile round trip gaining 3,800 feet, which is a substantial but achievable full day. Barr Camp was established in 1921 by Fred Barr, who built the trail by hand; it operates as a backcountry shelter and hostel. The Royal Gorge on day two is the deepest royal gorge in the United States — a 1,000-foot deep canyon cut by the Arkansas River through Precambrian granite with a bridge spanning it 1,053 feet above the river (one of the highest suspension bridges in the world).

Day 1 — Barr Trail to Barr Camp (10,200ft, 13mi RT, 3,800ft gain), overnight Manitou SpringsDay 2 — Royal Gorge Bridge & Park (1,053ft above Arkansas River), Arkansas River canyon walk, return

Barr Trail — Lower Section to Fremont Experimental Forest
The lower 4 miles of Barr Trail from the Manitou Springs trailhead (6,400 feet) through the Fremont Experimental Forest — a sustained climb through Engelmann spruce and ponderosa pine with views back toward Colorado Springs and the plains. The trail gains 1,800 feet in the first 4 miles; the maintained switchbacks make the gain manageable but the altitude is immediately felt above 7,000 feet. Starting by 6am is recommended to clear the above-treeline section before afternoon thunderstorms.

Barr Camp at mile 6.5 and 10,200 feet — the historic backcountry camp established by Fred Barr in 1921 while he was building the trail by hand. The camp operates as a hostel (advance reservations required) and serves hikers daily with hot drinks and shelter. The camp sits in the subalpine zone near treeline with the summit visible another 3,000 feet above; the camp's log buildings and the surrounding spruce-fir forest are the turnaround point for the two-day version.

The Cliff House Hotel in Manitou Springs — an 1874 Victorian hotel in the National Register of Historic Places, at the base of the Barr Trail in the historic spa town of Manitou Springs. The hotel is an 8-minute walk from the Barr trailhead. The dining room and full-service spa are appropriate recovery options after the Barr Trail day. Manitou Springs' mineral spring fountains (8 carbonated iron springs, all publicly accessible in the historic spa district) are a mineral water recovery tradition.

The Royal Gorge Bridge — a 1929 suspension bridge spanning the Arkansas River canyon at 1,053 feet above the water (one of the highest pedestrian suspension bridges in the world). The Arkansas River has cut a 1,000-foot deep gorge through Precambrian granite over approximately 3 million years; the canyon walls are some of the oldest exposed rock in Colorado (1.8 billion years). The bridge walkway crosses above the canyon; the aerial gondola provides a descent closer to the river level.

Royal Gorge Route Railroad — Canon City
4.4
A 2-hour scenic railroad through the floor of the Royal Gorge — the Royal Gorge Route operates diesel and steam excursion trains from Canon City through the canyon bottom, where the Arkansas River fills most of the available width and the canyon walls rise 1,000 feet immediately above. The train passes through sections where the canyon narrows to 30 feet wide — barely enough for the railroad track laid in 1880 after the 'Royal Gorge War' between rival railroads competing for the canyon right-of-way.
