Three days in the deep Piney Woods of East Texas, based around Sam Rayburn Reservoir — the largest lake wholly within Texas — and the surrounding Angelina National Forest. This is longleaf pine country, a landscape of clear spring-fed swimming holes, red-cockaded woodpecker groves, quiet backcountry lakes, and shoreline stretching for miles. Day one takes in the Rayburn shoreline and the storied Boykin Springs recreation area, with its 1930s CCC bathhouse and clear pool. Day two goes deep into the national forest for the Sawmill Hiking Trail along Boykin Creek, remote Bouton Lake, and the pine uplands between. Day three works the Jasper and Zavalla area — Ebenezer Park on the reservoir and the Angelina overlooks — before turning back toward Houston. It is a woods-and-water weekend of hiking, paddling, and swimming far from the crowds.
