Texas State Capitol

The surrounding 22-acre grounds are studded with monuments, and an ingenious underground extension nearly doubles the building's space without disturbing the historic exterior. Portraits of every Texas governor and president line the rotunda walls. It is the natural starting point for understanding the state's civic identity.

Austin takes its barbecue seriously, and no name looms larger than Franklin Barbecue, the James Beard–winning temple to smoked brisket whose legendary line forms early and moves slowly. Aaron Franklin's post-oak-smoked brisket, ribs, and sausage are widely called among the best in the country, sold until the day's supply runs out. If the wait is too long, downtown offers excellent quicker alternatives, but for many the pilgrimage is part of the Austin experience. Come early, bring patience, and go all in on the fatty brisket.

Bullock Texas State History Museum

Congress Avenue Bridge Bats
★ 4.5At dusk from spring through fall, the largest urban bat colony in North America — up to 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats — streams out from beneath the Congress Avenue Bridge over Lady Bird Lake in a swirling ribbon that can take forty minutes to empty. The bats took up residence after a 1980 bridge renovation inadvertently created ideal roosting crevices, and Austin has embraced them as a civic mascot ever since. Crowds gather on the bridge, on the lakeside lawn at the Statesman Bat Observation Center, and on kayaks and cruise boats on the water below to watch the nightly emergence. Arrive before sunset and ask a ranger or app for the expected flight time. It is a genuinely unforgettable free spectacle to close the day.
