Louisville & the Kentucky Bourbon Trail

The Kentucky Bourbon Trail runs south from Louisville through a corridor of limestone spring water, grain fields, and aging warehouses that have been producing American whiskey since the late 18th century. Louisville's NuLu arts district and Whiskey Row anchor the first day; Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest (the largest privately funded urban forest in the eastern United States, 16,137 acres) provides a quiet second day counterpoint before the distillery towns of Bardstown and Loretto on the third. Jim Beam in Clermont, Maker's Mark in Loretto, and Heaven Hill and Barton in Bardstown are all within a 45-minute drive of each other in the Kentucky knob country south of Louisville.

A six-story cultural center on the Ohio River waterfront documenting Louisville's most famous native — exhibits combine boxing career with humanitarian activism, the Vietnam draft resistance, and global influence. The documentary film installations and the interactive training room are the best sections.

A farm-to-table restaurant inside the 21c Museum Hotel on West Main Street — Kentucky sourced ingredients, an extensive bourbon list, and contemporary art installations visible from every table in the dining room. The 21c public art floors are worth exploring before or after lunch; admission to the art is free.

Afternoon
Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory
Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory
4.8
The factory and museum for the bat that has been official to Major League Baseball since 1884 — the 120-foot aluminum bat leaning against the building is the landmark; the factory tour shows the full production process from raw timber to finished bat. The museum holds artifacts from the history of American baseball that relate to the Slugger brand. A 45-minute attraction on the walk between NuLu and Whiskey Row.
Angel's Envy Distillery
Angel's Envy Distillery
4.7
A finished bourbon producer on Whiskey Row — Angel's Envy is finished in port wine barrels after aging, a technique that gives it a distinctive sweetness and the richest color of the major Louisville bourbons. The tasting room on West Main is designed to show the finishing barrel program; the full tour covers the blending and finishing process. The Rye finished in Caribbean rum casks is the second notable expression.

The Brown Hotel
The Brown Hotel

Louisville's historic grand hotel, open since 1923 — the English Renaissance Revival lobby and the English Grill dining room are both intact from the original design. The Hot Brown (an open-faced turkey and bacon sandwich with Mornay sauce, invented here in 1926) is the only thing to order for a late-night meal in the lobby bar.

Bernheim Arboretum & Research Forest

The largest privately endowed urban arboretum in the eastern United States — 16,137 acres of Kentucky knob country established by Isaac Bernheim (Louisville whiskey distiller) in 1929 as a gift to Kentucky. The formal arboretum in the main valley contains labeled collections of North American trees; the surrounding forest has 40 miles of hiking trail through old-growth hardwood and stream valleys. The giant forest sculptures (Thomas Dambo's Giant Forest Friends — three enormous wooden troll figures installed in 2019) have become the primary visitor draw. Morning visits before the crowds arrive are quietest.

An operating inn and tavern on Court Square in Bardstown since 1779 — the oldest western stagecoach stop in America, where Daniel Boone, Andrew Jackson, and Louis Philippe (the future king of France) all stayed. The murals on the upstairs walls were reportedly painted by Louis Philippe during a 1797 stay; they were damaged in a 1998 fire and restored. The restaurant serves Kentucky country cooking; the bourbon selection is appropriate for the location.

Heaven Hill Bourbon Heritage Center
Heaven Hill Bourbon Heritage Center
4.5
Heaven Hill is the largest independent family-owned distilled spirits producer in the United States — the heritage center in Bardstown covers the brand's production process and the breadth of its portfolio (Evan Williams, Elijah Craig, Larceny, Rittenhouse Rye). The barrel warehouse tour and the flight tasting comparing the single-barrel Elijah Craig expressions are the things worth doing. Bardstown has more distillery tasting rooms per block than anywhere outside Louisville.

The most scenic and historically complete distillery on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail — a National Historic Landmark in Loretto, on a wooded limestone spring property that has been producing bourbon since 1805. The red-shuttered buildings clustered around Hardin's Creek, the century-old rickhouses, and the original still house make this the most photographed distillery campus in Kentucky. The dipping experience (visitors dip their own bottle in the signature red wax) is the signature souvenir activity. Book the 10am tour to allow time for the dipping and the drive north.

The production and visitor center for the world's best-selling bourbon in Clermont, 30 minutes north of Maker's Mark on the way back to Louisville — the American Stillhouse covers the full Jim Beam production process and the family history (seven generations of Beams have made bourbon here). The Knob Creek and Basil Hayden expressions are also produced here. The Fred's Smokehouse restaurant on-site has solid barbecue for a late lunch before the drive back.
