Jackson Hole Scenic Valley: Snake River Overlook & Oxbow Bend

Jackson Hole — the broad valley floor between the Tetons to the west and the Gros Ventre Range to the east — is one of the most scenic valley systems in North America, and experiencing it at a relaxed pace from the car and its viewpoints is as rewarding as any hike. Snake River Overlook is the single most famous photograph location in the American West: the spot where Ansel Adams made his 1942 photograph of the Teton Range reflected in the Snake River's braided channels below. Oxbow Bend at the north end of the valley is the park's premier early-morning wildlife viewpoint — a calm meander of the Snake River where moose, great blue heron, river otter, and osprey are reliably present and the Grand Teton reflects in the still water. The Teton Park Road between the two points is the valley's finest scenic corridor, with the Cathedral Group in direct view for its entire length.

The elevated pull-off on US-89 where Ansel Adams photographed the Teton Range and Snake River in 1942 — one of the most reproduced landscape photographs in American history. The overlook looks northwest across the valley floor where the Snake River braids through cottonwood channels with the Cathedral Group (Grand, Middle, and South Tetons) rising 7,000 feet in the background. Dawn light from the east is the best condition; midday is still spectacular.

A designated turnout on the Teton Park Road with the most direct face-on view of the Cathedral Group — Grand Teton (13,775 feet), Mount Owen (12,928 feet), and Teewinot Mountain (12,325 feet) rising directly above the valley floor with no foothills intervening. The view is the reason Jackson Hole was preserved: the flat sagebrush valley and the sheer mountain faces are in the same visual field from a single roadside stop. The turnout has interpretive panels and benches.

A calm meander of the Snake River at the north end of Jackson Hole — the park's most reliable wildlife viewing point accessible by car. Moose wade in the willows, great blue heron fish from the bank, osprey and bald eagle patrol from the cottonwoods, and the still water reflects Mount Moran (12,605 feet) in the afternoon. The pullout is a wide gravel area with room for many vehicles; binoculars dramatically improve the experience.
