Joshua Tree Bouldering & Cholla Garden

Joshua Tree National Park sits at the convergence of the Mojave and Sonoran deserts — two hours from LA, a landscape of monzogranite boulder piles that has hosted rock climbers since the 1960s and continues to offer some of the best bouldering in North America. The park's 8,000-foot elevation range produces wildly different terrain across a single day's drive.

The Intersection Rock formation at the park's main climbing hub has over 400 established routes across its granite faces — beginner slabs and expert crack systems share the same outcropping. Even non-climbers can scramble to the top of the lower formations for views across Hidden Valley's boulder field. The park has 8,000 climbing routes total; the concentration around Hidden Valley is the highest in the park.

A dense grove of teddy bear cholla cactus in the Pinto Basin — the Cylindropuntia bigelovii colony here covers 12 acres and at golden hour the backlighted spines create a luminous silver-pink effect that is among the most photographed desert phenomena in the Southwest. The 0.25-mile loop trail passes through the garden at close range; the spines detach on contact and require pliers to remove.

A 1.3-mile loop in the White Tank Campground area passing through a boulder landscape that includes Arch Rock — a natural granite arch formed by differential erosion of the White Tank monzogranite. The boulders in this section are among the park's oldest visible formations, dating to the Mesozoic plutonic intrusions.

The inn's restaurant is the most atmospheric dinner in the Twentynine Palms area — outdoor dining in a historic adobe and wood-frame building surrounded by a natural fan palm oasis, with a menu of California comfort food that has fed the park's research station staff since the inn opened in 1928. The adobe bungalows around the oasis are the only lodging directly adjacent to the park.

29 Palms Inn or Joshua Tree Inn
Joshua Tree Inn is a 1950s motor court in Joshua Tree village favored by the music community, where Gram Parsons died in 1973. Both put you on-site for an early Skull Rock start.

A 1.7-mile loop in the Jumbo Rocks area around the park's most iconic formation — Skull Rock's hollow eye sockets are the product of water pooling in depressions and chemically weathering the feldspar out of the granite over millennia. The surrounding Jumbo Rocks campground area offers an additional 2 miles of scrambling terrain on massive granite monoliths.
