Palm Beach: Gilded Age Mansions, Mizner Architecture & Worth Avenue
A 70-mile drive north along Florida's Gold Coast to Palm Beach — the Spanish-Moorish fantasy city Addison Mizner designed in the 1920s and Henry Flagler's Beaux-Arts winter palace. Day one opens at West Palm Beach's Norton Museum before crossing to Palm Beach island's famous shopping arcades and landmark mansions along Ocean Boulevard. Day two visits Whitehall — the 55-room Flagler mansion now a Gilded Age museum — and ends at the Morikami Japanese Gardens in Delray Beach, a surprise of Japanese landscape design in subtropical Florida.

The garden sculpture walk connects the wings.

The half-mile corridor Addison Mizner designed in the 1920s as Palm Beach's luxury retail street — Spanish Baroque-influenced buildings in pink stucco with three pedestrian vias (Via Mizner, Via Parigi, Via Roma) running perpendicular into hidden courtyards, fountains, small galleries, and shaded restaurants. The vias are the best part: Mizner designed them as Venetian-style alleyways with irregular rooflines and climbing bougainvillea. Via Mizner contains Mizner's own apartment and studio above the shops.

★ 4.8Henry Flagler's 1902 winter estate — a 55-room, 60,000-square-foot Beaux-Arts mansion he built as a wedding gift for his third wife, Mary Lily Kenan. Flagler, Rockefeller's co-founder at Standard Oil, used his fortune to build the Florida East Coast Railway and effectively create modern Florida. Whitehall sat empty for decades, then was converted to a hotel, before being rescued and restored as a museum in 1960. The Marble Hall, the Louis XVI ballroom, and Flagler's private railcar (docked behind the mansion) are the centerpieces.

The Morikami's six garden styles progress chronologically through Japanese garden design from the Heian period through the modern era: a dry rock garden, a flat garden, a hill-and-pond garden, and a modern romantic garden occupy the central circuit. The Roji-en tea garden is the most refined section. The museum building holds rotating exhibitions of Japanese art and material culture.
