🌿 RelaxedWeekend · from Miami, FL
Everglades, Corkscrew Swamp & the Naples Gulf Coast
Two days crossing Florida's southern tip — the Everglades' river of grass from the Atlantic side, then west across the peninsula to the Gulf Coast at Naples. Day one starts with the Anhinga Trail through Everglades National Park's Royal Palm area (the easiest and most wildlife-dense walk in the park), then continues to Naples for the pier and Fifth Avenue South. Day two opens at Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary — the largest remaining old-growth bald cypress forest in North America — before the botanical gardens and the return drive across Alligator Alley.

Anhinga Trail — Everglades National Park
★ 4.8The 0.8-mile boardwalk loop through the Royal Palm freshwater slough — consistently the best wildlife-viewing trail in Everglades National Park and one of the most concentrated wildlife encounters in the US. Named for the anhinga (the 'snakebird' that swims underwater and spreads its wings to dry afterward), the trail also passes within feet of roosting great blue herons, tricolored herons, great egrets, purple gallinules, and year-round alligators basking in the sun directly below the boardwalk. Early morning is best for birds; the alligators are present all day. No hiking fitness required.

Pa-hay-okee Overlook — Everglades National Park
★ 4.7A short raised boardwalk 15 miles west of the park entrance, ending at an observation platform above the sawgrass prairie — the 'river of grass' Marjory Stoneman Douglas described in her 1947 book that helped create the park. Pa-hay-okee means 'grassy waters' in the Miccosukee language. The view from the platform in all directions is the classic Everglades image: a flat horizon of sawgrass stretching to the sky, with scattered hardwood hammocks rising above the prairie like islands. A 0.3-mile walk.

Naples Pier & Fifth Avenue South
★ 4.8The Naples Pier has occupied the same spot since 1888 — a 1,000-foot-long wooden fishing pier over the Gulf of Mexico that has been rebuilt after six hurricanes, most recently after Irma in 2017. Pelicans, dolphins, and manatees frequent the pier end. Fifth Avenue South, Naples' main cultural and dining street, is a 10-minute walk from the pier and has the city's best restaurant selection for the evening.

The Inn on Fifth — Naples
★ 4.6A 119-room boutique hotel directly on Fifth Avenue South in downtown Naples — walking distance from the pier, the beach access points, and the restaurants. Pool on the upper-level terrace. Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is 45 minutes northeast; tomorrow's drive there is an easy morning start.

Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary
★ 4.7A National Audubon Society sanctuary protecting the largest remaining strand of old-growth bald cypress forest in North America — cypress trees up to 700 years old and 130 feet tall forming a cathedral canopy above the black-water swamp. The 2.5-mile boardwalk loop is flat, shaded, and wheelchair accessible. In wet season (July–October), the boardwalk passes through knee-high water (below the elevated boards) where alligators, anhingas, and wood storks feed. Corkscrew hosts the largest known nesting colony of wood storks in the US during winter.

★ 4.8A 170-acre botanical garden on the south side of Naples — organized into distinct regional garden styles: Caribbean, Asian, Florida native, Brazilian, water garden, and a Children's Garden. The Brazilian garden (designed in the style of Roberto Burle Marx) and the water garden are the most distinctive sections. The garden café is good for a late lunch before the drive back.

Lowdermilk Beach Park — Naples
★ 4.7Naples' main public beach park — a calm Gulf beach with free parking, a small picnic pavilion, and beach volleyball courts. The Gulf of Mexico on the southwest Florida coast is typically calm and warm year-round, with calm aqua water and white quartz sand. A good final stop before the Alligator Alley (I-75) drive back to Miami.
