Winnebago Waters — Oshkosh Aviation & Fond du Lac's Gilded Age
A two-day loop around the shores of Lake Winnebago, Wisconsin's largest inland lake, pairing the world's greatest gathering place for aviation with the lumber-baron elegance of the Fox River Valley. Day one belongs to Oshkosh, home of the EAA Aviation Museum — the year-round shrine of the Experimental Aircraft Association, whose summer fly-in makes Oshkosh the busiest airport on earth for a week each July — followed by the collections of the Oshkosh Public Museum in a Tudor mansion. Before the drive south, a short stop at Lakeside Park on the shore of Lake Winnebago rewards you with the classic view of the region's defining body of water — at 137,000 acres, the largest lake entirely within Wisconsin. The park's white wooden lighthouse, reachable by a short walk and climbable for a small view over the water, is the city's signature landmark and a favorite photo spot. Gardens, a lagoon, and shaded picnic areas make it a pleasant place to stretch. From here it is a straightforward hour and a half back to Milwaukee.
