Highlights include the largest public collection of works by Milwaukee painter Carl von Marr and a rotating program of contemporary state artists. Just south of West Bend near Newburg, Riveredge Nature Center spreads across roughly 400 acres of restored tallgrass prairie, oak savanna, and hardwood forest along a quiet bend of the Milwaukee River. More than ten miles of easy, well-marked trails loop through wildflower meadows and down to the water, where the center has led decades of work to restore native lake sturgeon to the river. It's an unhurried, restorative afternoon of gentle walking — bring binoculars for the songbirds and, in season, the prairie in full bloom. The visitor center's exhibits and pollinator gardens are a fine short stop if you'd rather not walk the full loops.

Holy Hill — Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary & Pike Lake

Rising from the highest point in Washington County, the twin Romanesque spires of Holy Hill's basilica are visible for miles across the Kettle Moraine — a Carmelite shrine and pilgrimage site set in 400 acres of wooded hilltop. Climb the 178 steps of the scenic observation tower for a sweeping panorama that, on a clear evening, reaches all the way to downtown Milwaukee's skyline; the surrounding hardwood hills are spectacular in autumn. The basilica interior, with its vaulted nave and stained glass, is open to visitors and quietly moving. Just to the west, glacial Pike Lake and its state-park beach offer a final calm lakeside pause — or a short summit hike up Powder Hill — before the easy drive back to Milwaukee.
