Wichita Mountains: Bison, Granite & Open Sky

Ninety miles southwest of Oklahoma City, the Wichita Mountains rise improbably from the Great Plains as a 60-million-year-old granite island — jagged boulders and rounded domes above tallgrass prairie, with free-roaming bison herds that outnumber the cattle around them. The Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge protects 59,000 acres and has maintained a bison herd since 1907 as part of the early American conservation movement; today roughly 650 bison share the refuge with Texas longhorns and elk. Mt. Scott, at 2,464 feet, is the only paved summit drive in the refuge and delivers panoramic views of the Oklahoma plains in every direction.

The 15-mile Wildlife Loop Road through the core of the refuge is the best way to encounter bison at close range — herds of 50 to 200 animals routinely block the road, and waiting them out is part of the experience. The loop also passes prairie dog towns, longhorn cattle, and open grassland where elk feed in the early hours. Pick up a current herd location map at the Visitor Center near the refuge entrance.

4.1
A legendary Oklahoma roadside institution operating out of a 1901 general store in the ghost town of Meers — the Meersburger is made from Texas longhorn beef raised on surrounding Comanche County ranchland. The restaurant sits in the middle of nowhere adjacent to the refuge and is genuinely worth the stop. Expect a line on weekends; the burger justifies the wait.

The highest peak in the Wichita Mountains with a paved spiral road to the 2,464-foot granite summit — the only drive-up peak in the refuge. From the top, the entire refuge spreads below with Lake Lawtonka glinting to the north and Oklahoma plains extending 50 miles in every direction. Bouldering trails descend from the summit parking area through granite outcrops with prairie lizards visible on every warm slab.

A 3-mile moderate loop through the interior of the refuge from the Sunset picnic area — the trail climbs through mixed boulder fields and open tallgrass prairie with prairie dog towns visible from the ridgeline. Elk are most reliably spotted on this trail during late afternoon hours before sunset.
