Ocala Springs — Juniper Springs Paddle & the Alexander Springs Timucuan Trail

An hour and a quarter north of Orlando, the Ocala National Forest cradles the greatest concentration of first-magnitude springs on earth — sapphire boils of crystalline water rising from the aquifer amid the largest contiguous sand-pine scrub forest in the world. This two-day escape is built around two of its legends. Day one belongs to Juniper Springs, one of the oldest recreation areas in the Southeast, where a swim in the historic spring pool leads to the celebrated Juniper Run — a seven-mile paddle down a wild, twisting, jungle-like spring creek considered one of the finest canoe runs in the country. Day two moves to Alexander Springs, a broad, gently sloping first-magnitude spring where you can swim, snorkel, and walk the Timucuan Trail through the ancient hardwood hammock the Timucua people once fished and foraged. Nights are spent in a forest cabin or near Silver Springs, the fabled glass-bottom-boat spring on the forest's western edge.

Juniper Springs is one of the oldest developed springs in the Southeast, its stone-walled swimming pool built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s and fed by countless small vents boiling up through the white sand. The water holds a constant 72 degrees and a clarity that lets you count the pebbles on the bottom, while the historic waterwheel and millhouse beside the pool lend the setting a timeless, storybook quality beneath a canopy of live oak and cabbage palm. It's the ideal way to begin — a cool, gin-clear swim before the day's paddle. Arrive early on warm weekends, as this beloved spot fills quickly and access can be limited once the lot is full.

4.4
The Juniper Run is the reason paddlers make the pilgrimage — a seven-mile downstream journey along a narrow, spring-fed creek so wild and enclosed it feels like paddling through a jungle. From the launch behind the millhouse the clear water winds tightly beneath overhanging palms, ferns, and cypress, threading past sunlit pools and dark, root-tangled undercuts, with almost no sign of the modern world for hours. It is a demanding run — tight turns, frequent deadfall, and no shortcuts once committed — best suited to fit paddlers with a full day and an early start; the forest runs a shuttle back from the take-out at S.R. 19. Watch for otters, turtles, wading birds, and the occasional alligator, and give yourself the full four to five hours it deserves.

Fern Hammock Springs & Juniper Nature Trail
Fern Hammock Springs & Juniper Nature Trail

A short walk from the swimming area, the Juniper Nature Trail loops through shaded hammock to Fern Hammock Springs — a jewel-like basin many consider more beautiful than Juniper itself, where dozens of sand boils erupt across the bottom like tiny volcanoes and the water glows an almost unreal blue-green. Swimming is not permitted here, which keeps it pristine; instead the footbridge over the run gives a perfect vantage to watch the boils churning the sand below. The easy trail is a gentle, restorative way to stretch tired paddling muscles and take in the forest before heading toward the night's lodging. Keep an eye out for deer and gopher tortoises in the surrounding scrub.

After a long day of swimming and paddling, dinner in the Silver Springs and Ocala area is a welcome reward before settling in for the night — this easygoing local kitchen turns out hearty, comforting plates in a relaxed setting a short drive from the forest's eastern edge. It's a satisfying, unhurried meal to close out day one without a long detour from your lodging. The wider Ocala area offers a full range of restaurants, from riverside seafood to homestyle Southern fare, if you'd prefer another table. For campers deeper in the forest, stock up on provisions here or in Ocala before heading back to your site.

Ocala National Forest Cabin or Silver Springs Lodging
For the full forest experience, book one of the rustic cabins or campground sites within the Ocala National Forest — the Juniper Springs and Salt Springs areas both offer options that put you under a canopy of sand pine with a dark, star-filled sky overhead. For more amenities, the Silver Springs and Ocala area on the forest's western edge, about forty-five minutes away, has a full range of hotels and inns near the famous glass-bottom-boat spring, plus restaurants for a proper dinner. Either way, book ahead in the busy spring and fall seasons, as forest lodging is limited and popular.

Alexander Springs is a first-magnitude spring and one of the most swimmer-friendly in the forest — a broad, sandy-bottomed basin that shelves gently from ankle-deep shallows to a deeper vent where the aquifer pours out around 76 degrees, a touch warmer than its neighbors. The gentle grade and clear, calm water make it ideal for families, and the deeper boil is a favorite for snorkelers and even certified divers, who drift over the swaying eelgrass among schools of fish and basking turtles. Morning light and thin early crowds make for the best swim and the clearest visibility. Masks and snorkels reveal a surprising underwater world in the pale-blue depths.

Timucuan Trail

The one-mile Timucuan Trail loops out from the spring through a lush hardwood hammock and along the headwaters of Alexander Spring Creek, interpreting how the Timucua people who lived here for millennia used the plants and waters of this exact landscape — the palms, oaks, and wetland grasses that fed and sheltered them. Interpretive markers point out the cabbage palm, saw palmetto, and other species central to their world, while the shaded, root-laced path passes cool, clear runs where wading birds hunt. It is an easy, atmospheric walk that adds real depth to the day, connecting the living spring to the human history layered over it. Watch the creek edges for turtles, herons, and the occasional alligator.

Blackwater Inn, Astor
A short drive southeast toward Astor on the St. Johns River, the Blackwater Inn is a classic Old Florida riverside restaurant — a fitting midday reward after a morning in the springs, with wide windows over the water and a menu of fresh seafood, fried catch, and hearty plates. The setting on the broad, slow St. Johns captures the character of this stretch of the state, and the shaded deck is a fine place to watch boats and birds drift by. It's an easy detour on the way back toward Orlando and a more memorable lunch than the forest's limited on-site options.
