Pilot Mountain, Hanging Rock & Stone Mountain State Parks
Three days through North Carolina's Sauratown Mountains — the cluster of ancient quartzite monadnocks and granite domes rising above the Piedmont between Winston-Salem and the Blue Ridge. Pilot Mountain's distinctive quartzite pinnacle and Hanging Rock's sandstone cliffs form the first two days; Stone Mountain's 600-foot granite face and waterfall circuit close the trip before the drive back east. This is the most concentrated hiking scenery within two hours of Raleigh.
Day 1 — Pilot Mountain Jomeokee Trail (pinnacle base), Ledge Spring Loop, overnight DanburyDay 2 — Hanging Rock Trail (cliffside face), Cook's Wall ridge, Indian Creek & Upper Cascades waterfalls, overnight ElkinDay 3 — Stone Mountain Loop (600-ft granite dome, Stone Mountain Falls), Cedar Rock Mountain Trail, return Raleigh

Pilot Mountain — Jomeokee Trail
★ 4.8A 0.9-mile loop around the base of the Big Pinnacle — a 200-foot-tall isolated quartzite monadnock rising 1,400 feet above the Piedmont. The Jomeokee Trail circles the pinnacle below its sheer cliff face; the rock climbing is well-known (the pinnacle cannot be summited by hikers), but the trail around it gives close-range views of the quartzite bands and the rock's profile against the sky from all angles. The Yadkin River Valley and Davidson County spread below to the south.

Ledge Spring Loop — Little Pinnacle Overlook
★ 4A 5.4-mile loop from the main parking area that circumnavigates the park's mountain section, passing through the forest below the Big Pinnacle and climbing to the Little Pinnacle — a separate outcrop with an open rocky overlook of the main pinnacle and the surrounding piedmont. The ledge spring section crosses several small seasonal streams through oak-hickory forest; the Little Pinnacle provides the best photographic angle on Big Pinnacle from an elevated position.

Hanging Rock Trail
★ 4.8A 1.6-mile round trip (steep on the ascent) to Hanging Rock — the large overhanging sandstone face at the crest of the Sauratown Mountains that gives the park its name. The trail gains 400 feet in 0.8 miles through chestnut oak forest before breaking onto open quartzite rock; the exposed summit gives panoramic views across the Piedmont to the south and the Sauratown ridge to the east. An afternoon hike after a full morning at Pilot Mountain; the drop in temperature with elevation is noticeable.

Hanging Rock State Park Cabins — Danbury, NC
★ 4.8State park-operated cabins within Hanging Rock State Park — the most convenient overnight for back-to-back days in the park. The cabins are in the forest near the lake; the park's beach at Lake Hanging Rock is available to guests. Reserve well in advance, particularly for weekends. The Danbury General Store 5 minutes away handles basic supplies.

Cook's Wall Trail
★ 4.7A 2.0-mile trail along the quartzite ridge of the Sauratown Mountains to Cook's Wall — a long cliff face with open views west toward Pilot Mountain and north toward the Virginia border. The trail follows the ridge crest through stunted chestnut oak and Virginia pine above the cliffline, with multiple exposed rock outcrops offering viewpoints at different angles. A more sustained ridge walk than the Hanging Rock Trail; the cliff drops are immediate and the wind exposure is significant in any season.

Indian Creek Falls & Lower Cascade — Hanging Rock
★ 4.8A 1.8-mile round trip on the Indian Creek Falls Trail, descending from the main park facilities to the Lower Cascade (a 15-foot waterfall over quartzite ledges) and then to Indian Creek Falls (a 12-foot falls into a small plunge pool). The trail follows Indian Creek downstream through a hemlock-lined gorge; the rock formation at the falls is the same horizontal quartzite banding visible throughout the Sauratown range. A cooler, shadier alternative to the exposed ridge trails of the morning.

Afternoon
Upper Cascades & Hidden Falls — Hanging Rock
★ 4.9A 1.4-mile round trip to Upper Cascades — a 60-foot cascading fall over layered quartzite on Cascade Creek — and a separate 0.6-mile round trip to Hidden Falls, tucked in a hollow off the main parking loop. Four separate waterfalls within the park makes Hanging Rock one of the more waterfall-dense state parks in the NC Piedmont. The afternoon light in the cascade gorge is better than morning for photography.

Stone Mountain Loop Trail
★ 4.8A 4.2-mile loop through Stone Mountain State Park combining the park's three main features: Stone Mountain Falls (200 feet, one of the largest waterfalls in the NC Piedmont), the ascent across the open granite face of Stone Mountain itself (600 feet of exposed Cambrian granite, with a 200-foot section of sheer vertical face used for technical climbing), and Wolf Rock — a separate granite outcrop with long views south. The route goes Falls first, then up the dome, then Wolf Rock on the descent. Allow at least 3 hours.

Lunch
Cedar Rock Mountain Trail
★ 5A 2.4-mile loop to Cedar Rock Mountain — the second major granite outcrop in the park, less visited than the Stone Mountain face and with different views east toward the Brushy Mountains and the Piedmont rolling toward Raleigh. The trail climbs through mountain laurel and galax to an open rocky summit at 3,030 feet. A gentler finish to the trip than the main Stone Mountain loop — more of a ridge walk with open views than a technical granite scramble.

Grassy Gap Fire Road Overlook — Stone Mountain SP
The southern end of Stone Mountain State Park's Grassy Gap Fire Road gives pastoral views across the Yadkin River Valley and the lower Piedmont — a good final viewpoint from the park before the return drive. The fire road runs through open meadows and old fields reclaimed by the park, with old homestead apple trees still fruiting in the clearings. About 1.5 miles each way from the park's south boundary; the walking is flat and easy.
