Wilmington is the great historic port of the Cape Fear, a city whose antebellum wealth, blockade-running Civil War history, and 20th-century film boom have layered into one of the richest cultural destinations in the state. This three-day journey drives just over two hours southeast to a downtown of cobbled riverfront streets and one of the largest urban historic districts in the country. Day two crosses to the battleship USS North Carolina, a floating memorial to the state's World War II sailors, and out to the moss-draped paths of Airlie Gardens.
