Coastal Bend — Corpus Christi, Padre Island & the Port Aransas Ferry

Three days trading the Hill Country for the Gulf, on the wide barrier-island coast of the Texas Coastal Bend about two and a quarter hours southeast of San Antonio. Day one takes in Corpus Christi's breezy bayfront and the towering aircraft carrier USS Lexington, a World War II veteran now moored as a museum on Corpus Christi Bay. Day two is the wild centerpiece: Padre Island National Seashore, the longest undeveloped barrier island in the world, where the Malaquite beach and the grass-topped dunes stretch to an empty horizon. Day three works the northern islands — the beaches of Mustang Island and the free ferry ride across the ship channel to the salty fishing town of Port Aransas — before turning inland for home. It is a saltwater-and-sand weekend of swimming, beachcombing, birding, and one enormous gray warship, with two nights in Corpus Christi.

Corpus Christi Bayfront & Seawall

Arrive on the coast and start with a stretch of the legs along Corpus Christi's bayfront, the city's front porch on the water. The Shoreline Boulevard seawall and its stepped miradors overlook the sparkling bay, with the marina full of sailboats, pelicans working the pilings, and a constant Gulf breeze that keeps even summer bearable. Stroll out onto a T-head pier, watch the anglers and the sailboarders, and get your first look across the bay to the Lexington's gray silhouette moored on the far side. It is an easy, wind-in-your-hair introduction to the Coastal Bend and a good place to shake off the drive. Nearby are the marina restaurants and the small downtown museums if you want to fill in the morning further before crossing to the carrier.

Break for a Gulf-Coast lunch on the water before boarding the carrier. Corpus Christi's bayfront and marina district are lined with seafood houses serving the local catch — fried and grilled Gulf shrimp, oysters, redfish and flounder, and shrimp po'boys — most with decks over the bay and squarely in the $$ range. Grab a table with a water view, order something that swam that morning, and watch the boat traffic in the ship channel. It is the classic coastal midday, unhurried and salt-scented, and the natural refuel before an afternoon spent climbing around the decks of the Lexington.

USS Lexington Museum

Spend the afternoon aboard the USS Lexington, the World War II Essex-class aircraft carrier — nicknamed the "Blue Ghost" — now permanently moored on the bay as a floating museum. Self-guided tour routes lead up ladders and through the ship's steel guts: the cavernous hangar deck, the flight deck lined with vintage aircraft, the bridge and pilot house high above the water, the engine rooms deep below, and the cramped mess and berthing spaces where the crew lived. It is genuinely active sightseeing — steep ladders, narrow passages, and a lot of climbing across many decks in the Gulf heat, so wear real shoes and pace yourself. The flight-deck views back across the bay to the city skyline are superb. Allow two to three hours to do the big ship justice, and check the schedule for the flight simulator and any special exhibits.

Hotel on the Corpus Christi bayfront

Base both coastal nights in Corpus Christi, ideally along the bayfront. Shoreline Boulevard and the downtown marina district hold the city's cluster of hotels — several with bay views, walkable to the seawall and the waterfront restaurants — and put you in easy reach of both the national seashore south of the city and Mustang Island to the north. It is the most convenient hub for the whole weekend. Book a room facing the water if you can, for the sunrise over the bay and the lit-up Lexington at night. Corpus fills on summer and holiday weekends, so reserve ahead; rates ease a little just off the immediate waterfront if you want to trim the budget.

Malaquite Visitor Center & Beach

Cross Laguna Madre to Padre Island National Seashore, which protects seventy miles of the longest undeveloped barrier island on earth. Start at the Malaquite Visitor Center, on a low bluff above the Gulf, where exhibits explain the island's fragile ecology and the seashore's celebrated sea-turtle program — this is a primary nesting beach for the endangered Kemp's ridley, and in early summer rangers sometimes release hatchlings at dawn (call ahead for dates). Below the center, the developed Malaquite beach is the easy-access stretch: swim in the warm Gulf surf, walk the tide line for shells and sand dollars, and watch the pelicans and sanderlings. Note that closed-toe water shoes help against the occasional stingray in the shallows; shuffle your feet. This is the gateway to the wild island beyond.

The dunes & the wild beach walk

Beyond the developed area, the island turns genuinely wild. Walk the boardwalk and dune trails behind Malaquite through the grass-topped foredunes — great rolling ridges of pale sand held together by sea oats and morning glory, alive with ghost crabs, shorebirds, and the constant hiss of the wind. This is one of the last great stretches of undeveloped Gulf dune-and-beach system in the country, and simply walking a mile or two down the open sand, with the surf on one side and the dunes on the other and not a building in sight, is the essence of the national seashore. Watch for the coyote tracks and the wind-sculpted patterns in the sand. Bring everything you need — there is no shade and no services out here, and the sun and wind are relentless. Carry plenty of water and reapply sunscreen often.

Bird Island Basin & Laguna Madre

For the afternoon, cross to the calm, bay side of the island at Bird Island Basin on the Laguna Madre — one of the premier windsurfing and kite-surfing flats in North America thanks to its shallow, steady water and reliable Gulf wind. Even without a board it is a beautiful, tranquil counterpoint to the surf side: warm knee-deep water, rafts of wading birds, and the enormous flat sky of the lagoon. Kayak rentals and launches make it easy to paddle the shallows and look for herons, roseate spoonbills, and the countless shorebirds the Laguna Madre draws. It is a gentler, birder's afternoon after the exposed morning on the Gulf beach, and a fine place to watch the light soften over the water before heading back to Corpus for the night.

Second night in Corpus Christi

Return to your Corpus Christi base for the second night, rinsing off the sand and salt of the seashore. The bayfront and marina district again offer the easiest positioning and the best selection of waterfront dinner spots — freshly landed shrimp and fish just steps from the hotel. Staying put both nights spares you a second check-in and keeps you central for the short morning hop north to Mustang Island and the Port Aransas ferry. Turn in early for tomorrow's ferry crossing, which runs best before the day's traffic builds.

Head north to Mustang Island, the barrier island between Corpus Christi and Port Aransas, and spend the morning on the broad, drive-on Gulf beach at Mustang Island State Park. Five miles of open sand front the surf here, less remote than the national seashore but wilder and quieter than the town beaches, with good swimming, shelling, and surf fishing. Walk the tide line, bodysurf the gentle Gulf breakers, and comb for shells and the odd sand dollar as the morning shrimp boats work the horizon. The park also has a paddling trail through the back-island seagrass flats if you want to trade the surf for the calm bay side. It is the last, unhurried beach morning of the trip before the ferry crossing and the drive home. Watch for the beach-driving rules and soft sand, and carry water.

The Port Aransas Ferry

At the north tip of Mustang Island, drive onto the free state-run ferry that shuttles across the Corpus Christi Ship Channel between Port Aransas and the mainland — a short, salty, only-in-Texas crossing that is a highlight in itself. The little ferries run continuously, and the few minutes on the water put you right beside towering tankers and shrimp boats in the channel, with dolphins that regularly surface alongside the boat and gulls wheeling for the wake. Roll down the windows and watch for the dolphins; they are nearly a sure thing here. Lines can be long on peak summer afternoons, so a midday crossing after the beach helps you beat the worst of the wait. It is a genuine working-coast experience and a memorable way to leave the islands.

Port Aransas — waterfront & a last seafood meal

Spend the last of the afternoon in Port Aransas, the salty, laid-back fishing town at the island's tip, and cap the trip with a final Gulf-Coast meal. "Port A" is built around its harbor and charter fleet, and its waterfront restaurants and dockside shacks serve the freshest possible fried shrimp, blackened redfish, oysters, and stone-crab claws, all in the $$ range. Wander the marina to watch the day's catch come in, poke through the beach-town shops, and eat with a view of the boats before pointing the car back toward San Antonio. It is the perfect low-key coda to the coastal weekend — one more plate of Gulf seafood before the highway. From here it is a straight run back inland.
