Hill Country: Natural Bridge Caverns, Wimberley Springs & Hill Country Wine
Three unhurried days in the Texas Hill Country following spring-fed creeks and limestone cave systems north of San Antonio — the Edwards Aquifer landscape that feeds the clearest rivers in Texas. Natural Bridge Caverns introduces the underground geology; the Blue Hole at Wimberley shows it at the surface. The second day follows the Hill Country wine trail west of Austin. The third loops back through Comfort, the 1854 'freethinker' German colony that built no church for its first 50 years, and Kerrville's Guadalupe River.

Natural Bridge Caverns
★ 4.7The largest commercial cave in Texas — discovered in 1960 by four St. Mary's University students who entered through a small surface opening, following the 60-foot natural limestone bridge that spans the cave's entrance. The cave was formed 12,000 years ago when the water table dropped and air entered the limestone chambers, triggering the speleothem formation that continues today. The Discovery Tour (1.25 miles, 75 minutes) passes through two main chambers: the Castle of the White Giants (formations up to 40 feet tall) and the Hall of the Mountain Kings (with the Watchtower, a 45-foot column). Temperature is a constant 70°F year-round.

Blue Hole Regional Park — Wimberley
★ 4.6A spring-fed swimming hole on Cypress Creek in Wimberley — an old cypress grove hangs over a deep blue-green pool fed by the Edwards Aquifer, maintained at a constant 68°F. The Blue Hole was a private family property for generations before the City of Wimberley acquired it as a regional park; entry is timed-entry by reservation in summer (the limit protects the spring from overuse). The cypress trees are 200-300 years old; the pool is 15-20 feet deep in the main swimming area. Wimberley Square is 5 minutes away for lunch.

Wimberley Square & Cypress Creek
★ 4.7Wimberley's small historic square has a strong gallery and artisan shop presence for a town of 3,000 — glassblowing studios, pottery galleries, and independent restaurants cluster in the blocks around the square. The Cypress Creek waterway runs through town; the Wimberley Valley Winery is on the creek below the square. Market Day (first Saturday of every month, March–December) brings 450 vendors to the fairgrounds a mile from the square and is one of the largest outdoor markets in Texas.

Pedernales Falls State Park
★ 4.7A 5,212-acre state park on the Pedernales River featuring a series of limestone falls and swimming areas — the river drops over ledged limestone slabs in a broad terrace cascade rather than a single plunge, creating a waterfalling river scene more than a conventional waterfall. The Falls Area Trail (0.6 miles round trip) reaches the main cascade overlook; below the falls the river pools in deep clear swimming holes accessible from a separate trail. The park's interior limestone hills hold deer, wild turkey, and golden-cheeked warblers (endangered, nesting in old-growth Ashe juniper).

Becker Vineyards — Hill Country Wine Trail
★ 4.6One of the most awarded wineries in Texas — Becker Vineyards produces Cabernet Sauvignon, Viognier, and Merlot from 46 acres of estate vineyards in the Stonewall area. The winery's stone building and German barn architecture fit the Hill Country vernacular; the lavender field adjacent to the vineyard blooms in late May and early June. The US-290 corridor between Stonewall and Fredericksburg is Texas's most concentrated wine region — Grape Creek, William Chris, and a dozen other wineries operate within a 10-mile stretch.

Fredericksburg Wine Road 290 — Second Winery Stop
★ 4.9The US-290 wine trail continues east to west with Grape Creek Vineyards (estate winery with a cave tasting room blasted into the hillside), William Chris Vineyards (focused on Texas native grapes; one of the state's most respected producers for all-Texas varietals), and Pedernales Cellars (on a hilltop with a panoramic view of the Hill Country). A single afternoon tasting at one of these gives a strong Hill Country wine education before settling into Fredericksburg for the evening.

Kerrville-Schreiner State Park — Guadalupe River
★ 4.6A 517-acre state park on the upper Guadalupe River in the Hill Country — a more swimming-and-relaxing park than a hiking-focused one. The Guadalupe here runs clear over a limestone bed with a gravel bar beach and cypress-shaded banks; the swimming is excellent from May through September. The trail system (1.5 miles along the river) connects the swimming area to a quieter upstream section where the river narrows between cedar and live oak bluffs.

Museum of Western Art — Kerrville, TX
★ 4.8A focused collection of American Western art — over 350 works by Charles Russell, Frederic Remington, and contemporary Western painters and sculptors, in a limestone building designed to resemble a Hill Country ranch structure. The museum covers the full arc of Western art from the 19th-century documentarians (Russell lived with Blackfoot people; Remington covered the Apache Wars) through the contemporary Western genre. Rotating exhibitions and a sculptor residency program keep the collection active.

Comfort, TX — High Street Historic District
A 1854 German freethinker colony that refused to build a church for its first 50 years — settled by the Freier Verein (Free Association), a group of German '48-ers' (liberals who fled after the failed 1848 German Revolution) who established a community based on freethought principles. The only monument in the United States erected in honor of Union loyalists in a Confederate state stands in Comfort — the Treue der Union (True to the Union) monument, erected in 1866 to honor the 68 German Unionist civilians killed by Confederate forces at the Nueces Massacre. The limestone commercial buildings on High Street are among the least altered 19th-century streetscapes in Texas.
