🏛️ CulturalWeekend · from San Diego, CA

Joshua Tree & Twentynine Palms: The High Desert

Three hours northeast of San Diego, Joshua Tree National Park sits on the boundary between the Mojave and Sonoran deserts — the park's 800,000 acres span two distinct desert ecosystems, with the Joshua tree forest of the high Mojave above 3,000 feet and the Colorado Desert below. The park's granite monolith formations (Wonderland of Rocks, Hidden Valley, Skull Rock) are the most dramatic geological landscape accessible from Southern California. Twentynine Palms, the gateway town north of the park, has the Twentynine Palms Mural Project — 23 large-format murals documenting the history and culture of the high desert — and the 29 Palms Inn, one of the oldest operating resorts in the California desert.

Cholla Cactus Garden & Pinto Basin Road
Cholla Cactus Garden & Pinto Basin Road
The transition zone between the Sonoran and Mojave deserts — the 0.25-mile Cholla Cactus Garden walk passes through a dense stand of Bigelow cholla cactus whose light-catching spines glow silver in morning light. The cactus is called 'jumping cholla' for its ability to attach its barbed segments to passing animals; the spine clusters fall off and propagate new plants. Pinto Basin Road through the lower desert passes ocotillo forests and roadrunner sightings in the early morning.

Keys View
Keys View
4.8
The premier viewpoint in Joshua Tree at 5,185 feet — a panorama over the Coachella Valley to the Salton Sea (35 miles) and on clear days to the Baja California mountains in Mexico. The San Andreas Fault runs directly below the viewpoint through the valley floor; the fault is visible as a straight linear feature on the valley floor. Palm Springs and Indio are directly below; the white dot of the Salton Sea is at the southern horizon. The view is best in morning before afternoon haze develops.

Skull Rock Nature Trail & Wonderland of Rocks
Skull Rock Nature Trail & Wonderland of Rocks
4.6
The 1.7-mile Skull Rock Nature Trail from the Skull Rock parking area — the trail passes through the Jumbo Rocks granite monolith cluster, with the Skull Rock formation (a rounded granite boulder with two weathered hollows that resemble eye sockets) as the signature stopping point. The Wonderland of Rocks north of the trail is the densest Joshua tree forest in the park, a 12-square-mile granite maze of boulders and trees that is the primary rock climbing area in Southern California.

29 Palms Inn
29 Palms Inn
4.5
The oldest desert resort in the California high desert — adobe bungalows around the Oasis of Mara at the north entrance to Joshua Tree, operating since 1928. The restaurant serves farm-to-table desert fare; the desert garden is the most mature planted desert landscape in the region. The inn is the most atmospheric overnight option for Joshua Tree: the dark sky above the resort is one of the darkest within driving distance of Los Angeles.

Twentynine Palms Mural Project
5
Twenty-three large-format outdoor murals documenting the history and culture of the Twentynine Palms area — artists commissioned by the Twentynine Palms Art Gallery painted the murals on building exteriors throughout the commercial district beginning in 1994. The subjects range from the Serrano and Chemehuevi peoples who used the Oasis of Mara to the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center (the largest US Marine base) to the homesteaders who built the 'little houses' of the high desert in the 1920s and 1930s. A self-guided walking tour map is available at the visitor center.

4.1
The NPS visitor center at the north entrance to Joshua Tree and the Oasis of Mara — a natural desert oasis of California fan palms and mesquite used by the Serrano people for centuries before the arrival of the first homesteaders in 1873. The 0.5-mile Oasis of Mara trail circles the palm oasis; the interpretive signs document the indigenous history of the site. The 'twentynine palms' of the town name refers to the original palm count in the oasis (though the grove has expanded significantly).
