🌿 RelaxedWeekend · from Savannah, GA

Wormsloe Oak Avenue & Tybee Island Beach

Two relaxed days using Savannah's most photogenic landscapes — the Wormsloe oak avenue on day one morning, Bonaventure Cemetery in the afternoon, and Tybee Island beach on day two. Wormsloe's 1.5-mile live oak avenue is entirely accessible from the parking lot; the walk down the avenue and back through the oak canopy with Spanish moss overhead is the essential Savannah landscape experience with minimal exertion. Bonaventure Cemetery's 160 acres of Victorian monuments and live oak alleys above the Wilmington River can be experienced entirely from the main avenue roads by car or by a short level walk. Tybee Island on day two is 18 miles from downtown Savannah — Georgia's most visited beach, with the 1742 lighthouse at the north end and the Tybee Pier at the south end framing a 3-mile beach. The North Beach section near the lighthouse is the quieter end.

Day 1 — Wormsloe live oak avenue (1.5mi canopy walk), Bonaventure Cemetery (Victorian alleys, Johnny Mercer grave), overnight SavannahDay 2 — Tybee Island North Beach, Tybee Lighthouse (1742), seafood lunch, return to Savannah

The 1.5-mile entrance avenue of Wormsloe Historic Site — 400 live oaks with Spanish moss meeting overhead in an almost complete canopy for the full length of the avenue. The walk down and back is 3 miles on a flat, firm path; the light through the oak canopy is most dramatic in the early morning when it cuts horizontally through the moss. The avenue leads to the 1740s tabby ruins of Noble Jones' fortified house; the surrounding museum and trail system are optional extensions.

Bonaventure Cemetery above the Wilmington River — the most visually striking Victorian cemetery in the American South, with live oak alleys, Spanish moss, and elaborate 19th-century iron and marble monuments. The cemetery is driveable; the main alleys through the oldest sections can be seen from a car at low speed. The walk to Johnny Mercer's grave (Section H, Row 2, Lot 10) is under 0.3 miles from the main road. The Bonaventure bluff drops to the river behind the older sections; the river view through the oaks is peaceful.

An afternoon in the Savannah historic district — Forsyth Park fountain, the squares, and the Lafayette Square and Calhoun Square neighborhood for a quieter section of the grid. The SCAD-occupied buildings throughout the district (SCAD has restored 60+ historic buildings as campus facilities) add an arts element to the architecture walk; the SCAD Museum of Art on Turner Boulevard is free and opens early afternoon.

Overnight in the Savannah historic district — the Marshall House (1851, on the National Register), the Gastonian Inn (1868 twin mansions), and the Mansion on Forsyth Park (facing the 30-acre park) are the most character-rich accommodations. The Congress Street and Bay Street restaurant corridors are the main evening dining zones.

Tybee Island North Beach — the quieter northern end of the 3-mile barrier island beach, adjacent to the 1742 lighthouse and away from the commercial Pier area. The North Beach is narrower than the south end but less crowded in summer; the Atlantic here faces southeast, so the morning sun is directly on the beach face. Loggerhead sea turtles nest on the Tybee beaches May-August; the nest markers are visible in the dune vegetation.

The Tybee Island Lighthouse (established 1742, rebuilt 1867) — the oldest lighthouse in Georgia and one of the oldest in the United States, still active as a US Coast Guard aid. The 154-step climb is optional; the lighthouse complex includes the lightkeeper's cottages (three historic dwellings open as museum exhibits) and the adjacent North Beach Grill for a seafood lunch. The view from the lighthouse top shows the Savannah River entrance, Fort Pulaski, and the open Atlantic horizon.
