Saguaro National Park East — Rincon Mountain Trails

A full day in Saguaro National Park's Rincon Mountain District — the eastern unit of the park, 15 miles from downtown Tucson, containing the densest stand of saguaro cactus accessible by trail in the Sonoran Desert. The Cactus Forest Trail follows the base of the Rincon Mountains through saguaros that can reach 50 feet and weigh 6 tons (taking 75 years to grow their first arm); the Freeman Homestead Trail leads to the ruins of an 1800s homestead in the saguaro forest; and the Douglas Spring Trail ascends the first 3 miles of the Rincon Mountain backcountry for the best elevation-gain views of the saguaro canopy below. The park was established in 1933 around Tucson specifically to protect the saguaro, which grows only in the Sonoran Desert and is the defining visual of the American Southwest. The east unit is 10 miles across and contains 128 miles of trail; the trail system reaches 8,666-foot Mica Mountain in the backcountry.

The Cactus Forest Trail — a 2.5-mile loop through the densest accessible saguaro stand in the Rincon Mountain District, with the cacti reaching 50 feet in height and growing at densities of 25-50 per acre. The trail begins at the Red Hills Visitor Center and winds through desert washes and rocky ridges at 2,700-foot elevation. Saguaros begin growing their first arm after 75 years; the oldest in the park are estimated at 175-200 years. Gila woodpeckers and gilded flickers drill nest holes in the saguaro arms; elf owls occupy vacated holes.

The Freeman Homestead Trail — a 1-mile loop from the Javelina Picnic Area through a mesquite bosque to the ruins of the Freeman homestead (1890s desert homesteaders who lived surrounded by the saguaro forest). The trail is flat desert floor walking at 2,800 feet; the homestead ruins include the rock foundation walls of the main house, outbuildings, and the water cistern system the family used to survive the Sonoran Desert summers. Javelinas (collared peccaries) are commonly seen in this area in the early morning.

The Douglas Spring Trail — a 6.4-mile one-way backcountry trail ascending from the desert floor into the Rincon Mountain ponderosa pine forest. The Bridal Wreath Falls pulloff at 1.5 miles is the best viewpoint across the saguaro canopy below; in winter the falls run over the travertine rim. Trail conditions: exposed, rocky, 5.4mi RT to Bridal Wreath and back.
