🥾 ActiveLong weekend · from Tucson, AZ

Saguaro West, Mount Lemmon & Sabino Canyon

Three active days covering Tucson's full ring of sky islands and desert wilderness — Saguaro National Park West and the Tucson Mountain District on day one, Mount Lemmon's summit trails and the Wilderness of Rocks on day two, and Sabino Canyon's canyon trail system in the Santa Catalinas on day three. Saguaro West is the smaller, geologically older unit of the park (Tucson Mountain volcanic formation, 70 million years old versus the Rincon Mountain granite of the east unit), with the King Canyon Trail rising through saguaro into volcanic desert to the Wasson Peak summit (4,687ft). The Wilderness of Rocks on Mount Lemmon is a distinct granite boulder wilderness above 8,000 feet where the forest opens into a landscape of massive granite domes and open meadows; the Wilderness of Rocks loop via Marshall Gulch and Lemmon Rock Lookout is one of the best mountain hikes in Arizona.

The King Canyon Trail to Wasson Peak — a 5.5-mile RT, 1,350-foot gain hike ascending from the desert floor through saguaro and brittlebush desert to the summit of Wasson Peak (4,687ft), the highest point in the Tucson Mountain District. The peak is on the remnants of a 70-million-year-old volcanic formation; the summit view shows the full Tucson Basin, downtown Tucson, and the ring of sky island mountain ranges (Santa Catalinas, Rincons, Santa Ritas, Tucson Mountains). The King Canyon wash at the base of the trail has ironwood, palo verde, and a desert oasis feel in the riparian zone.

The Bajada Loop Drive — a 6-mile dirt road loop through the Tucson Mountain District's denser saguaro stands, with trailheads for the short Valley View Overlook Trail (0.8mi) and Desert Discovery Nature Trail (0.5mi, interpretive signs). The 'bajada' is the alluvial apron of rocky outwash from the mountain base; saguaro densities here are among the highest in the park.

Signal Hill Picnic Area and the Hohokam petroglyphs — a 0.3-mile walk to a basalt hilltop covered in 800-year-old Hohokam-era rock art (petroglyphs), with over 200 individual images including spirals (believed to mark solstice and equinox sun positions), humans, animals, and abstract designs. The Hohokam people occupied the Sonoran Desert from approximately 300 CE to 1450 CE and left extensive petroglyph sites throughout the Tucson Basin.

Overnight in Tucson — the Arizona Inn (1930, 14-acre resort with pink adobe casitas, most historic accommodation in Tucson), the Hotel Congress (1919, downtown historic district, Art Deco interiors), or the Hacienda del Sol Guest Ranch (1929 Catalina foothills resort) are the most distinctive options for an active Tucson weekend.

The Wilderness of Rocks loop from Marshall Gulch — a 9-mile loop at 8,000-9,000 feet through the granite boulder landscape of the Mount Lemmon wilderness, connecting Marshall Gulch Trail, the Wilderness of Rocks cutoff, and the Lemmon Rock Lookout Trail (to a 1930s fire lookout on a granite dome with 360-degree views). The Wilderness of Rocks is a landscape of massive granite boulders and open meadows at tree line, with Engelmann spruce and corkbark fir; the density of granite formations resembles a giant's marbles strewn across the mountain.

Summerhaven — Summit Village
Summerhaven village at 9,100 feet — the small mountain community at the Mount Lemmon summit, with the Mount Lemmon Cookie Cabin (notable for cookies and pie, reportedly a Tucson institution) and the Mount Lemmon Café for a midday pause. The Ski Valley (the southernmost ski area in the United States, operating December-March) is adjacent to Summerhaven; the chair lift runs in summer as a sightseeing ride.

Second night in Tucson — the Barrio Histórico neighborhood has several boutique B&Bs in 1880s-1920s adobe buildings; the Sam Hughes neighborhood boutique inns are in the University of Arizona historic district. The West Congress Street restaurant corridor is the main dining zone for local Sonoran Mexican cuisine (Sonoran-style Mexican differs from Tex-Mex: larger burritos, fresh corn tortillas, carne seca, chimichangas — the chimichanga was invented in Tucson).

The Bear Canyon Trail to Seven Falls — a 7-mile RT hike from the Bear Canyon Trailhead through a granite desert canyon to a series of seven waterfalls stacked in a canyon pool sequence. The trail crosses Sabino Creek nine times (stepping stones during low water; scrambling required after rain); the pools below the falls are swimmable in spring and early summer before the monsoon. The canyon walls rise 400-600 feet above the creek in the lower section; canyon wren and white-throated swift nest in the cliffs.

Sabino Canyon Tram — Canyon Return Descent
4.6
The Sabino Canyon tram — an electric narrated tram that runs the 3.8-mile paved Sabino Canyon road from the visitor center to the canyon upper terminal, crossing nine bridges over Sabino Creek. The tram serves as the return descent for the Bear Canyon day hike (the tram can be boarded at the lower Sabino terminal); riders can hike up and tram down. The Sabino Canyon road is no-private-vehicle; the tram (or foot/bike) is the only access. The canyon's saguaro, palo verde, desert willow, and streamside cottonwood frame the nine-bridge descent.
