All tours of the village depart from here; you cannot drive or wander up on your own. Back east along I-40, the village of Old Laguna climbs a low hill above the highway, crowned by the brilliant white-walled San José de la Laguna Mission, built by 1699 and one of the most photographed churches in New Mexico — its simple facade blazing against the sky as you approach from the interstate. Laguna Pueblo, a Keres-speaking community like Acoma, welcomes respectful visitors to the church, whose interior holds a painted and carved altar screen and a hand-decorated ceiling of Pueblo and Christian motifs. Park below and walk up the old village lanes to the church; ask before entering and never photograph during services or feast days. It is a quieter, self-guided counterpoint to the morning's formal tour, and the late light on the white walls is superb.
