The Catwalk National Recreation Trail

A steep, narrow paved road (State Road 159) switchbacks nine miles up into the mountains east of Glenwood to Mogollon, a gold- and silver-mining boomtown that once held thousands and now clings to a canyon as a near-ghost town of weathered wooden storefronts, an old church, and a scatter of seasonal shops and a museum. Wandering its single street among the leaning buildings and abandoned mine works is an atmospheric plunge into the Gila's mining past. The road is spectacular but demanding — no trailers, drive it slowly — and the town's few businesses keep limited seasonal hours, so time your visit and check the road before committing. It is a fittingly wild final stop before the long drive home.
