Appalachian Trail Terminus & Blue Ridge Mountain Railway

Amicalola Falls in the Chattahoochee National Forest drops 729 feet in a series of seven cascades — the tallest cascading waterfall east of the Mississippi River. The name "Amicalola" comes from the Cherokee word for "tumbling water." A cable suspension bridge at the base pool puts visitors close enough to feel the mist of the lowest cascade, while a staircase of 600 steps climbs alongside the falls to the top. A bronze plaque at the park entrance marks the official start of the 8.5-mile Approach Trail to Springer Mountain, making this the traditional launching point for thru-hikers beginning the full 2,198-mile journey to Maine.

The 5-mile trail from Amicalola Falls State Park to the Len Foote Hike Inn — a backcountry eco-lodge accessible only on foot and bookable well in advance — winds through mixed Appalachian hardwood forest on its way north toward the AT. Even without a lodge reservation, the first 2 miles of trail offer excellent forest hiking through second-growth oak and hickory, with spring wildflower displays of trillium, bloodroot, and mountain laurel along the ridgeline. The trail provides a quieter and more immersive forest experience than the crowded falls viewing area, and the return hike keeps the legs warm before the afternoon drive to Springer.

The casual dining room inside the Amicalola Falls State Park Lodge offers mountain views and an accessible Southern menu — sandwiches, burgers, and comfort plates — at state-park prices that make it the most practical midday option before the afternoon drive to Springer Mountain.

Springer Mountain at 3,782 feet is the southern terminus of the Appalachian Trail — the 2,198-mile footpath to Mount Katahdin in Maine, the world's most famous long-distance hiking trail. The summit is reached via a 1-mile hike from the USFS road parking area or via the full 8.5-mile Approach Trail from Amicalola Falls. A bronze plaque embedded in a boulder reads: "Appalachian Trail — Georgia to Maine — A footpath for those who seek fellowship with the wilderness." A trail register box at the summit contains notebooks filled with thru-hiker names and aspirations, departing each spring for a 5-to-7-month northward journey. The summit offers atmospheric views through mixed hardwood forest, with Frosty Mountain and the Blue Ridge visible to the north on clear days.

Blue Ridge's compact and walkable downtown anchors on a main street of independent restaurants, breweries, and shops set against the backdrop of the North Georgia mountains. The Blue Ridge Scenic Railway depot sits at the center of town, and the Toccoa River is only blocks away. Harvest on Main and Blue Ridge Brewery are both within easy walking distance and offer good dinner options before settling into lodging for the night.

The Blue Ridge Scenic Railway operates diesel excursion trains from the historic 1905 Blue Ridge depot through the Toccoa River valley and across into McCaysville, Georgia and Copperhill, Tennessee — twin cities straddling the state line. The 13-mile round trip takes approximately 3 hours, passing through dense hardwood forest, over Toccoa River bridges, and through a landscape largely unchanged since the railroad was first built in the 1880s to service the copper mining industry. Vintage passenger cars are open-air or enclosed depending on the season, giving riders a choice of fresh mountain air or a weathered windowed view. The train makes a 90-minute layover at McCaysville/Copperhill, giving passengers time to explore the twin-cities district on foot before the return run to Blue Ridge. The railway operates March through December, primarily on weekends, and is one of the most scenic short rail excursions in the entire Southeast.

McCaysville, Georgia and Copperhill, Tennessee are separated only by the Toccoa/Ocoee River, sharing a main street that literally crosses the state line — visitors can step from one state to the other mid-block. The area was historically a major open-pit copper mining district; by the early 20th century the sulfur-dioxide emissions from copper smelting had stripped the surrounding mountains of every tree and blade of grass, leaving them barren red and orange hills visible for miles. The mountains are still visibly recovering, now covered in young second-growth forest that tells the story of an industrial boom and its long environmental aftermath. The train's 90-minute layover allows time to browse the Main Street shops and take in the unusual geography of this twin-state community.

The Deep Hole swimming hole and tubing put-in on the Toccoa River near Blue Ridge offers one of the finest mountain river tubing experiences in Georgia. The river runs cold and gin-clear through long stretches of rhododendron-lined banks with the Blue Ridge foothills rising on either side, a combination that makes even a casual float feel like deep wilderness. Tube rentals are available from outfitters in Blue Ridge, and a full run takes approximately 2 to 3 hours depending on water levels. The Toccoa River becomes the Ocoee River once it crosses into Tennessee, where it hosted the canoe and kayak slalom events of the 1996 Atlanta Olympics — the same mountain water, a different name on the other side of the state line.
