Gunpowder Valley — River Trails, Jerusalem Mill & the NCR Rail Trail

Barely thirty minutes north of downtown, Gunpowder Falls State Park protects a green ribbon of river valley that feels a world away from the city. This one-day loop pairs the cold, trout-rich Gunpowder River — where shaded footpaths trace the water beneath towering tulip poplars — with two of the park's set pieces: the restored 1772 Jerusalem Mill village, a living-history hamlet at the heart of the park, and the flat, tree-tunneled Northern Central Railroad Trail, a converted rail bed that runs dead-straight through the countryside toward the Pennsylvania line and is made for easy miles on foot or by bike. It's an active, low-effort day of riverside walking, historic wandering, and rail-trail rolling, capped by a meal in the horse-country hamlets of Monkton or Sparks.

The centerpiece and headquarters of Gunpowder Falls State Park, Jerusalem Mill is a beautifully preserved Quaker mill village founded in 1772 on the banks of the Little Gunpowder Falls. The tall stone gristmill still stands beside the old blacksmith shop, gun factory, and cooper's house, with the visitor center and museum inside the mill itself. Wander the village green, watch the river slide under the stone bridge, and pick up trail maps before setting out. On weekends costumed interpreters and craftspeople bring the eighteenth-century workshops to life. It's a genuinely atmospheric place to begin the day and the hub from which the valley's footpaths radiate.

From Jerusalem Mill, a web of riverside trails follows the cold, clear Little Gunpowder and, a short drive west, the main-stem Gunpowder Falls below Prettyboy and Loch Raven dams. The paths run flat to gently rolling beneath tulip poplars, sycamores, and beeches, crossing the water on stepping stones and passing fly fishermen working one of the best wild-trout rivers in the mid-Atlantic. Loops of two to five miles are easy to assemble, with swimming holes and gravel bars for a mid-hike pause. The tailwater below the dam runs cold even in July, keeping the whole valley notably cool on hot days.

Friendly Farm
A beloved Upperco institution in the rolling farmland near the park, Friendly Farm serves platters of fried chicken, country ham, and homemade sides family-style at long tables, with a pond and grounds the kids can roam between courses. It's hearty, unpretentious Maryland country cooking and a fitting midday anchor for a day of river trails and rail-trail miles. Portions are generous, so arrive hungry after the morning's walking.

The 20-mile Northern Central Railroad Trail follows the bed of the rail line that once carried Abraham Lincoln to Gettysburg, running flat and straight from Ashland north to the Pennsylvania state line, where it connects to York County's rail trail. The restored 1898 Monkton Station serves as the trail's midpoint hub, with parking, a small museum, water, and a bike-rental shop right on the crushed-stone path. Roll north through a shaded corridor beside the Gunpowder, over trestle bridges and past old mill sites, then turn around whenever you like — the grade is so gentle the return is effortless. Walking, running, and stroller-friendly too, it's the easiest way to bank scenic miles in the valley.
