Assateague & the Ocean City Coast — Wild Ponies, Open Beach & the Inlet
Two days on Maryland's Atlantic shore, split between wilderness and boardwalk. Day one is Assateague Island National Seashore, a 37-mile barrier island of undeveloped dune, marsh, and open beach where the famous wild ponies graze right among the campsites and the surf runs uninterrupted to the horizon — a place to swim, paddle the back-bay, and walk the dunes with a herd of feral horses for company. Day two crosses back to the built-up sandbar of Ocean City for its three-mile boardwalk, the busy Ocean City Inlet where the bay meets the sea, and one last beach walk before the drive home. The contrast — untouched barrier island one day, classic Atlantic resort the next — is the whole point, and both are within easy reach on foot and by paddle.

Assateague Island Visitor Center & Life of the Marsh Trail
★ 4.8Stop at the mainland visitor center before crossing the Verrazano Bridge onto the island to get oriented, check the day's pony sightings and tide charts, and see the aquariums and touch tanks that introduce the barrier-island ecosystem. Once across, the short boardwalk nature trails — the Life of the Marsh, Life of the Forest, and Life of the Dunes loops — each run under a mile through a different island habitat, from salt marsh full of herons and fiddler crabs to the wind-shaped loblolly forest. They're the ideal first walk to shake off the drive and, more often than not, your first close encounter with the wild ponies grazing beside the path. Keep the required distance: these horses are feral and will bite and kick.

Swim in the surf, comb for shells and sand dollars, and settle in for the afternoon — and don't be surprised when a band of the island's famous wild ponies ambles down the sand or picks its way among the dunes nearby. This is one of the only places on the East Coast where feral horses share an open ocean beach with swimmers. Bring everything you need, including shade and water, as services on the island are minimal; and give the ponies a wide berth no matter how tame they seem.

★ 4.8The island has only a small camp store and no restaurants, so a packed cooler is the way to eat here — spread a blanket in the dunes or at one of the bayside picnic areas and make lunch part of the beach day. Stock up in Berlin or West Ocean City on the drive down. Guard your food closely: the ponies have learned to raid coolers and picnic tables, and feeding them (even by accident) is both illegal and dangerous.

Sinepuxent Bay Kayaking
The calm, shallow back-bay side of the island is ideal for paddling. Launch a kayak or canoe from the bayside landing into Sinepuxent Bay and glide through the salt marsh, where you'll pass grazing ponies at the water's edge, wading egrets and ibis, and — if you're lucky — the sika deer and bald eagles that frequent the marsh. Rentals and guided sunset paddles are available on the island in season, or bring your own boat. The protected water makes this beginner-friendly, but keep an eye on wind and afternoon thunderstorms, which can build quickly over the bay.

Historic Berlin, ten minutes inland, is a charming, walkable small town with the boutique Atlantic Hotel and several inns, plus good restaurants for dinner after a salty day outdoors. Ocean City, just across the bay, offers the full spread of beachfront and bayside hotels at every price point and puts you steps from tomorrow's boardwalk. Book ahead in summer, when the whole coast fills up.

★ 4.6Ocean City's boardwalk stretches roughly three miles along the Atlantic, a classic mid-Atlantic beach promenade that's at its best walked in the cooler morning before the crowds build. Stroll from the Inlet north past the amusement piers, the 1902-era arcades, saltwater-taffy and Thrasher's fries stands, and the wide free beach on your right. It's an easy, flat few miles with the ocean on one side and the whole boisterous history of the resort on the other — rent a beach cruiser (bikes are allowed on the boards until mid-morning) to cover more of it. A tram runs the length if you'd rather ride than walk.

★ 4.6At the boardwalk's southern end, the Ocean City Inlet is where the Atlantic meets Assateague's northern tip and the back bays drain to the sea — cut open by the great hurricane of 1933 and now the busy channel through which the charter and commercial fishing fleet passes. Walk the stone jetty and Inlet Park to watch boats run the cut, anglers work the rocks, and, across the water, the wild dunes of Assateague where you stood yesterday. The little Ocean City Life-Saving Station Museum sits right here, telling the story of the coast's shipwrecks and rescues. It's the natural pivot point of the resort and a fine place to feel the ocean's raw power up close.

The Shark on the Harbor (West Ocean City)
For a proper coastal lunch, cross to the working harbor in West Ocean City, where the commercial boats land the day's catch. The Shark on the Harbor is a well-regarded spot overlooking the fishing fleet, focused on local seafood — rockfish, tuna, and Maryland crab pulled from the same waters you paddled and watched at the inlet. It's a step up from boardwalk fries and a good way to bookend the trip with a real seafood meal before the drive back. Reservations help on summer weekends.

The downtown beach near the inlet is broad and easy to reach, with lifeguards, restrooms, and rinse showers making it a simple, low-effort close to the weekend. Body-surf the Atlantic breakers one more time, then rinse off and pack up as the afternoon eases toward the drive home. Watch the flags and swim near a lifeguard stand — the surf and rip currents can be strong here.
