Deep Creek Lake — Mountain Lake, Muddy Creek Falls & the Cranesville Bog

Two days in Maryland's high western corner, where the state's largest lake sits at 2,500 feet in the Allegheny highlands and the terrain feels more like New England than the mid-Atlantic. Day one splits between Deep Creek Lake itself — Maryland's biggest inland water, ringed by state park beach, boat rentals, and paddling coves — and nearby Swallow Falls State Park, home to Muddy Creek Falls, the state's tallest free-falling waterfall, tucked in a grove of 300-year-old hemlocks. Day two climbs the Wisp resort area for high-country trails and views, then drops into the Cranesville Swamp, a rare boreal bog left over from the last Ice Age, before a scenic drive back through the mountains toward home. It's a cool-weather, high-elevation escape built around water, waterfalls, and ancient forest.

Deep Creek Lake is Maryland's largest freshwater lake, a 3,900-acre reservoir with 65 miles of wooded shoreline set high in the Allegheny Mountains of Garrett County. The state park on the lake's northeast shore anchors the day, with a sandy swimming beach, a Discovery Center full of mountain-ecology exhibits and live animals, and trailheads climbing Meadow Mountain. Get your bearings here — rent a kayak, paddleboard, or pontoon, take a first swim in the cool mountain water, or walk the beach loop. At 2,500 feet the air stays crisp and the water refreshing even at the height of summer.

Casual and welcoming to families and hikers alike, it's a reliable midday refuel in the heart of the lake district.

Swallow Falls is the scenic crown of western Maryland: a 1.25-mile Canyon Trail loop threads through a virgin grove of hemlocks and white pines up to 360 years old — some of the oldest trees in the state — past a series of waterfalls on the Youghiogheny River. The centerpiece is Muddy Creek Falls, at 53 feet the tallest free-falling waterfall in Maryland, which you can view from the rim and from the base of the plunge. The trail also passes the Swallow, Lower Swallow, and Tolliver Falls, with the river sliding over broad rock ledges between them. The footing is rocky and the mist keeps things slick near the falls, but the loop is short and endlessly photogenic — Henry Ford and Thomas Edison famously camped here.

Deep Creek Lake lodging
Deep Creek Lake is vacation country, so lodging is plentiful and varied: lakefront rental cabins and homes are the classic choice, while the Wisp Resort at McHenry, the Lake Pointe Inn, and a handful of lodges and B&Bs offer full-service rooms. Booking near McHenry puts you close to tomorrow's Wisp-area trails and restaurants for dinner. Reserve well ahead for summer and fall-foliage weekends, when the lake is busiest and the mountain nights turn cool.

In summer, western Maryland's only ski resort turns its slopes over to hikers and mountain bikers. Ride the chairlift or hike up the flanks of Marsh Mountain at Wisp for wide views over Deep Creek Lake and the surrounding Allegheny ridges, then explore the resort's trail network and adventure park. Just across the highway, the state park's Meadow Mountain Trail offers a longer, quieter forest hike along the ridgeline. Either way the morning is about earning the high-country panorama of lake and mountains before the day drops into the bog. The elevation keeps things cool, and the open ski runs fill with wildflowers in summer.

Mountain State Brewing Co.
A rustic timber-frame brewpub in nearby Deep Creek, Mountain State Brewing pairs Appalachian-brewed ales with wood-fired flatbread pizzas in a warm, barn-like room with mountain views. It's a fitting midday stop between the Wisp trails and the Cranesville drive — hearty enough after a morning of hiking, and a taste of the local craft scene. The flatbreads travel well too if you'd rather carry lunch toward the swamp.

Straddling the Maryland–West Virginia line, Cranesville Swamp is a rare 'frost pocket' boreal bog — a relic of the last Ice Age where cold air pools and sub-arctic plants survive thousands of miles south of their normal range. A Nature Conservancy boardwalk carries you out over the open sphagnum bog, past insect-eating sundews and pitcher plants, cranberries, and a stand of tamarack larch that turns gold in autumn. The easy loop is under two miles, and the eerie, silent quality of the bog — with its cotton-grass meadows and cool microclimate — makes it one of the most unusual landscapes in the mid-Atlantic. Boots help, as the ground off the boardwalk is genuinely wet.
