Delaware Beaches — Cape Henlopen, Rehoboth & the Indian River Inlet
Three days working south down the Delaware coast, a string of state-park beaches, walkable resort towns, and one of the mid-Atlantic's best rail-trails, all reachable across the bay from Baltimore. Day one is Cape Henlopen State Park at the mouth of the Delaware Bay — dune trails, a WWII observation tower, and the beach — paired with historic Lewes, the first town in the First State. Day two centers on Rehoboth Beach: its mile-long boardwalk and the crushed-stone Junction & Breakwater Trail that links Lewes and Rehoboth through farm and forest by bike. Day three drops to Delaware Seashore State Park and the dramatic Indian River Inlet, where the Atlantic pours through a channel spanned by a soaring cable-stayed bridge, before the drive home. It's a coast-hugging trip built on beach walking, dune hiking, boardwalks, and rail-trail miles.

The Junction & Breakwater Trail is a 6-mile crushed-stone rail-trail on the bed of an old Penn Central line, running between Lewes and Rehoboth Beach through a surprisingly rural landscape of farm fields, pine woods, and salt marsh. Flat, shaded, and beautifully maintained, it's ideal for a morning bike ride or run — over the long boardwalk bridges across the wetlands, past old railroad relics, with interpretive signs along the way. Rent a bike at either end and ride point to point, or make an out-and-back of whatever length suits. It's the calm, green counterpoint to the resort bustle and the highlight of the day for active travelers.
