Cape Cod: Pilgrim Legacy, Marconi's First Signal & Provincetown

The Boston & Sandwich Glass Company operated from 1825 to 1888 — a major industrial glassmaker that pioneered lacy glass pressing in the United States and whose products (originally called 'Sandwich glass') became a generic name for American pressed glass. The museum holds 6,000 pieces from the factory's 63-year run, tracing the evolution from free-blown glass through the mechanical pressing process that made decorative glass affordable to working families. Live glassblowing demonstrations run throughout the day.

Sandwich (1637) is the oldest town on Cape Cod — its historic district around Town Neck Road and Main Street preserves intact 18th-century clapboard houses, the 1640 Hoxie House (the oldest surviving house on Cape Cod), and the Dexter Grist Mill (1654, still operating on Town Mill Pond). The First Parish Meeting House (1834) sits at the center of the original town green. Shawme Pond below the mill draws herring in spring runs and provides the center of the historic district walk.

A 100-acre museum complex in Sandwich combining an automobile museum (30 antique automobiles in a reproduction Shaker round barn), an American folk art collection, and botanical gardens with 2,000 varieties of rhododendrons that bloom May–June. The gardens were designed by Charles Dexter, who developed the Dexter rhododendrons (hybrids adapted to Cape Cod's climate) on this property in the early 20th century.

An 1853 Victorian inn in Barnstable Village on Cape Cod Bay — the historic county seat of Barnstable County, with a 1690 courthouse and a preserved village center. Barnstable Village is on the bay side, quieter than Hyannis, with water views from the inn grounds. Tomorrow's drive toward Provincetown continues on US-6.

The site where Guglielmo Marconi transmitted the first two-way transatlantic wireless message on January 18, 1903 — a greeting between President Theodore Roosevelt and King Edward VII. Marconi built four 210-foot wooden towers here in 1901; all that remains are foundation fragments and interpretive panels, as the Atlantic has eroded nearly to the original transmitter building location. The site is on the outer Cape's Atlantic bluff, with dramatic views of the exposed outer beach below. The Cape Cod National Seashore's Salt Pond Visitor Center, 10 minutes north, has the best exhibits on the seashore's ecology and human history.

The oldest lighthouse on Cape Cod — first lit in 1797 (the current tower dates from 1857), it sits atop the Cape's highest point in Truro, 120 feet above the sea on an eroding clay bank. In 1996, after the bank had eroded to within 100 feet of the lighthouse foundation, the entire 430-ton tower was moved 450 feet inland — one of the largest lighthouse relocations in US history, echoing the Cape Hatteras move 3 years later. The tower is open for climbing in season; the view from the lantern room shows the complete outer Cape from Race Point to Wellfleet.

Provincetown is where the Mayflower anchored first in November 1620 — the Pilgrims spent five weeks here before sailing across the bay to Plymouth. The Pilgrim Monument (252 feet, 1910) is the tallest all-granite structure in the United States, built to mark the Mayflower's first landfall; the 116-step climb plus ramps give panoramic views of Cape Cod Bay. The Provincetown Pilgrim Monument & Provincetown Museum below covers the landing history and the town's subsequent story as a Portuguese fishing community and 20th-century arts colony (Edward Hopper, Mark Rothko, and Hans Hofmann all worked here). Commercial Street's gallery walk is the densest concentration of art galleries in New England.

A boutique guesthouse in an 1828 sea captain's home in the center of Provincetown — pool, gardens, and a short walk to MacMillan Wharf and the Pilgrim Monument. Provincetown's restaurant scene is the strongest on Cape Cod; the A-House, Front Street, and Ciro & Sal's are the most established.

A living history museum with two separate sites: the Wampanoag Homesite (staffed by Wampanoag Indigenous people interpreting their own history, not costumed reenactors) and the English Village (a reproduction 1627 Pilgrim settlement staffed by first-person interpreters in 17th-century English character). The distinction is deliberate: the Wampanoag site makes clear that the Plimoth colony was built on Wampanoag homeland, and the interpreters speak from their own family histories and living traditions rather than from a colonial-era script. One of the most thoughtfully interpreted living history museums in the US.

Plymouth Rock — a 4-ton Dedham granite boulder in a columned portico on the waterfront — has been designated the 'first landing place' of the Mayflower Pilgrims since the early 19th century, though no contemporary 1620 source mentions it. The rock has been moved multiple times and is now approximately half its original size (pieces were broken off as souvenirs over two centuries). The Mayflower II, a 1957 full-scale reproduction of the 1620 vessel, is docked at the adjacent pier — 106 feet long, the size that carried 102 passengers for 66 days across the Atlantic. Crew interpreters in 17th-century dress explain the voyage.

The site of the 1622 fort the Pilgrims built on the hill above the harbor — Burial Hill preserves the graves of early Plymouth Colony settlers including Governor William Bradford and Captain Myles Standish. The cemetery and the view from the hill overlook Plymouth Bay and the harbor where the Mayflower anchored. Plymouth's downtown around Court Street has a good lunch selection; the Mayflower Society House (an 1754 mansion) is open for tours on the walk back to the waterfront.
