Rhode Island contains two of the great cultural destinations of the American East — Newport's Gilded Age mansions represent the most concentrated display of private wealth in American history, and Providence's College Hill is the best-preserved 18th-century streetscape in the US. The Breakers

Benefit Street — Mile of History
The most intact 18th-century streetscape in the US — a mile of Georgian and Federal houses from the 1720s through 1820s, preserved largely because Providence declined economically in the 19th century and couldn't afford to rebuild. John Brown's 1786 house, the 1775 Providence Athenaeum, and the John Hay Library at Brown University are the anchors; 250 buildings on the street are listed on the National Register.
