A relaxed two days east of Bozeman into the quiet Boulder Valley, in the shadow of the strange, abrupt Crazy Mountains that rise straight off the plains with no foothills to soften them. Day one follows the Boulder River south of Big Timber to Natural Bridge Falls, where the whole river vanishes into the earth and reappears below a limestone cliff, then wanders the Crazy Mountain foothills before an evening in the small ranching town of Big Timber. Day two slows into the town itself — the excellent little Crazy Mountain Museum, a stroll along the historic McLeod Street, and the banks of the Yellowstone River — before an unhurried drive back. It is a weekend of falling water, big open country, and the kind of small-town Montana that rewards lingering.

★ 4.9About 25 miles up the Boulder River south of Big Timber, the entire river performs a geological vanishing act: in high water it thunders over a limestone lip, and in lower flows it disappears completely into fissures in the rock, surging back out of springs in the cliff face below. A natural rock bridge once spanned the gorge here — it collapsed in the 1980s — but the falls, the sinking river, and the roar from the cliff outlets remain a genuine natural wonder. Paved and gravel interpretive paths with railings and overlooks make it an easy, family-friendly walk with several vantage points into the chasm. The cool spray, the sound, and the shaded forest make it the restful centerpiece of the day.

Yellowstone River at Big Timber
Just south of town the Boulder River joins the Yellowstone, and the river-access sites along the bank make a peaceful final stop before the drive home.
