The Bridger Range — Fairy Lake, Sacajawea Peak & the Ridge

The Bridger Mountains rise abruptly out of the valley floor immediately north of Bozeman, a knife-edged limestone range that gives the town its dramatic eastern skyline and its most accessible high-country hiking. This one-day escape trades the crowds of Hyalite and the Gallatin for a quieter alpine world just forty minutes up Bridger Canyon. The day warms up on the College 'M' Trail, the switchbacking path to the whitewashed 'M' that every Bozemanite has climbed, then drives the gravel canyon road to Fairy Lake, a cirque tarn tucked beneath the crags. From the lake a steep trail climbs to the saddle and on to 9,665-foot Sacajawea Peak, the highest summit in the range and the crown of the legendary Bridger Ridge. Mountain goats haunt the upper slopes, golden eagles ride the autumn thermals along the ridgeline during the famous Bridger raptor migration, and the summit view spans from the Absarokas to the Crazies to the Spanish Peaks.

Chico Hot Springs & the Paradise Valley Soak

An unhurried day trip southeast into the Paradise Valley, where the Yellowstone River carves a green corridor between the Gallatin and Absaroka ranges on the road toward the north gate of Yellowstone. The centerpiece is Chico Hot Springs, a beloved 1900 resort whose open-air, geothermally fed pools have drawn soakers for more than a century — a place to spend hours doing very little beneath the peaks. The day is built around that ease: a scenic drive down US-89 through Emigrant, a riverside lunch, a wander through the tiny art-and-antique village of Emigrant, and a long, restorative afternoon float in the hot pools before an easy hour back to Bozeman.

Livingston — Railroad Depot, River Town & the Writers' Main Street

Just over Bozeman Pass and 35 minutes east sits Livingston, the raffish, wind-scoured railroad town that has always been the true gateway to Yellowstone. Founded in 1882 as a division point on the Northern Pacific, Livingston grew up around its magnificent depot, where tourists once transferred to the branch line running south to Gardiner and the park's original entrance. This one-day journey moves through the restored depot and the Yellowstone Gateway Museum, wanders a historic Main Street that has drawn painters, novelists, and screenwriters for decades — Thomas McGuane, Jim Harrison, Richard Brautigan, and Peter Fonda all made the town their own — and ends along the banks of the Yellowstone River, the longest free-flowing river in the Lower 48. It is a compact, atmospheric day: brick storefronts, saloon-and-gallery culture, and the constant Paradise Valley wind that gives Livingston its legend.
