The Great Stone Door

The view from the top frames the full depth of Savage Gulf — 800 feet of forested canyon wall dropping to Big Creek. Greeter Falls & the Spiral Staircase
★ 4.9Greeter Falls is a two-tiered cascade on Firescald Creek and the most rewarding waterfall hike in South Cumberland. A 1.3-mile loop drops off the plateau rim, passing the broad ledge of Upper Greeter before reaching the fifty-foot Lower Greeter, which pours over an overhanging lip into a deep, cold plunge pool. The final descent to the base is by way of a spiral steel staircase bolted to the cliff face — a genuinely fun bit of engineering that delivers you to boulder-strewn creek level. In summer the plunge pool is a popular swimming hole; the rock is slick, so pick your footing with care. The trail continues to Boardtree Falls for those wanting more.

Foster Falls Rim Overlook

A short quarter-mile walk from the picnic area leads to an overlook of the 60-foot Foster Falls, which drops off a sandstone amphitheater ringed by the crags that make this one of the Southeast's premier rock-climbing walls. Late-afternoon light turns the sandstone gold and the climbers on the far wall into silhouettes — a quiet, dramatic coda before the hour's drive home.
