Milwaukee: Pabst Mansion, Art Museum & Brady Street

Captain Frederick Pabst's 1892 Flemish Renaissance Revival home documents the brewing fortune that built Milwaukee into one of America's wealthiest cities — in 1900, Milwaukee produced more than 20% of all beer brewed in the United States. The 37-room mansion retains 90% of its original furnishings, including German-carved walnut paneling, Italian ceramic tile work, and silverware from Pabst's own brewery. Pabst bought the house outright from its architect and then kept expanding it; the result is one of the most architecturally coherent Victorian mansions in the Midwest.

Milwaukee's original brewpub, operating since 1987 in a Victorian commercial building on the downtown arts corridor. The house beers are traditional Milwaukee lager styles alongside American craft ales; the kitchen serves elevated bar food including a widely praised Reuben sandwich and house-made bratwurst. The bar interior is original pressed tin and dark wood.

The Santiago Calatrava-designed Quadracci Pavilion opened in 2001 and immediately became the most visited building in Wisconsin — a brise-soleil of 72 movable steel fins, spanning 217 feet above Lake Michigan, that opens at 10am and closes at 5pm with a mechanical grace that draws crowds daily. The permanent collection includes the most significant Georgia O'Keeffe holdings outside New Mexico and substantial German Expressionism from Milwaukee's German immigrant patronage tradition.

A Brady Street bar in a converted Victorian storefront with an extraordinary cocktail program and a curated whiskey selection. Brady Street is Milwaukee's most historically dense commercial district — originally the center of the city's Italian and Polish immigrant communities, now an independent bar and restaurant strip that has maintained its character without gentrification-era homogenization.
