Milwaukee Art District & Cedarburg Mill District

MIAD's public gallery in the Third Ward's 1905 Boston Store building hosts rotating exhibitions of student, faculty, and outside artists focused on contemporary design and fine art. The Third Ward itself was Milwaukee's original wholesale district; its 1890s brick warehouse buildings now house 30+ galleries, the Milwaukee Public Market, and the majority of the city's independent restaurants.

A year-round indoor market in the Third Ward's 1914 commission building, with vendors selling Wisconsin cheese (including Carr Valley, Hook's, and Uplands), Lake Michigan-caught fish, local charcuterie, and craft beverages. The Great Lakes Whitefish vendor is the most regionally distinctive stop — whitefish and yellow perch from commercial Great Lakes fishers represent a food culture unique to this part of the country.

A 40-acre private sculpture park in Milwaukee's northern suburbs, housing 50 large-scale works by Mark di Suvero, Henry Moore, Isamu Noguchi, Anthony Caro, and Ellsworth Kelly installed across a landscape of meadows, ponds, and woodland. The collection was assembled by Peg Bradley beginning in the 1960s and represents one of the most significant outdoor sculpture holdings in the American Midwest. Open year-round; changing light and seasons transform the experience completely.

Milwaukee's landmark 1893 Victorian Grand Hotel's signature restaurant serves American steakhouse cooking at the level the city's legacy warrants — dry-aged Wisconsin beef, Great Lakes fish, and a wine list with serious depth. The Pfister's lobby art collection (400+ Victorian-era paintings) is worth a pre-dinner walk regardless of the dining choice.

Cedarburg's commercial street is Wisconsin's most intact 19th-century small-town commercial district — two blocks of cream brick Italianate storefronts from the 1860s–1880s, housing galleries, antique shops, a working winery, and the Cedar Creek Settlement, a complex of converted mill buildings. The Cedarburg Cultural Center occupies the 1874 woolen mill building and hosts year-round exhibitions. The town's building stock is 85% original to the pre-1890 boom period.

A cheese shop in the Cedar Creek Settlement's historic mill complex, carrying the full range of Wisconsin artisan cheesemakers — Uplands Pleasant Ridge Reserve, Hook's aged cheddars, Marieke Gouda, and small-batch blues from Caves of Faribault. The deli counter produces excellent cheese boards and sandwiches; the staff are consistently knowledgeable about the Wisconsin cheese geography.

A Wisconsin estate winery housed in an 1864 mill building, though Cedar Creek Winery itself opened in 1994 — the stone structure still shows the original water wheel housing and the mill's industrial bones beneath the tasting room renovation. The winery produces 20+ varieties from Wisconsin-grown and purchased fruit; the cranberry wine (Wisconsin produces 60% of US cranberries) is the house specialty that no California winery could make.

A Cedarburg dining staple in a renovated historic building, serving Wisconsin comfort food with better sourcing than the genre usually delivers — house-made bratwurst using local pork, a proper beer cheese soup, and excellent Friday perch. The bar carries Wisconsin craft beers from Milwaukee, Madison, and Door County.
