John Bryan & Clifton Gorge — The Little Miami's Dolomite Canyon

An hour northeast of Cincinnati, the young Little Miami River has sawed a startling gorge through the limestone and dolomite of the Springfield plateau, and the walk along its rim and floor is the finest short hike in southwest Ohio. John Bryan State Park protects the wide lower gorge, where the Rim Trail and the Gorge Trail thread past mossy cliffs, hemlock stands, and rapids; upstream, the Clifton Gorge State Nature Preserve narrows to a slot where the river roars through a channel barely twenty feet wide beneath 100-foot walls. The day ends at Clifton Mill — one of the largest working water-powered gristmills in the country, turning since 1802 — and in the artist village of Yellow Springs, whose cafes and Glen Helen trails give an easy, unhurried counterpoint to the gorge. A single day, but a genuinely wild and geologically dramatic one.

John Bryan protects the widest and most walkable stretch of the Little Miami gorge, a canyon carved through 400-million-year-old limestone and dolomite left behind by the meltwater of retreating glaciers. Begin on the Rim Trail for elevated views down into the wooded chasm, then drop to the Gorge Trail, which runs along the river past mossy overhangs, cold-air hemlock groves, and small rapids where the water quickens. The 0.75-mile Pittsburg-Cincinnati Stagecoach Trail and the connecting loops let you tune the distance to your energy. Trails can be slick where seeps cross the rock, so wear grippy shoes and start early to have the quiet gorge largely to yourself.

Immediately upstream of John Bryan, the state nature preserve protects the wildest section of the canyon, where the Little Miami compresses into a slot barely twenty feet across and thunders between dolomite walls rising nearly 100 feet. The 2.2-mile Gorge Trail follows the river past named features — the Narrows, the Blue Hole, Steamboat Rock, and the Amphitheater — through one of the best-preserved cold-climate relict forests in Ohio, where Canada yew and arborvitae survive from the last ice age. Interpretive signs mark the geology and the pioneer history of the old mill sites. Stay on the marked trail; the preserve's ecology is fragile and the cliff edges are unfenced.

The Winds Cafe, Yellow Springs
A Yellow Springs institution since 1977, The Winds Cafe grew from a coffeehouse into one of the region's most respected farm-to-table kitchens, with a menu that rotates weekly around local produce and a deep wine list. It sits on Xenia Avenue in the heart of the walkable village, an easy stroll from the shops and galleries. It's the natural midday reward after a morning in the gorge; on a fine day, request a patio table.

On the edge of the village, Glen Helen is a thousand acres of old-growth forest, streams, and cliffs threaded by more than twenty miles of trail. Its centerpiece is the iron-tinted Yellow Spring itself, which stains the rock a vivid ochre and gave the town its name. Easy loops lead to the Grotto, the Cascades on Birch Creek, and the Pompey's Pillar rock formation, making this a gentler afternoon counterpart to the morning's gorge scrambling. The Trailside Museum near the entrance is a good place to orient and to learn the glen's natural history.
Clifton Mill
Clifton Mill
4.4
Perched over the Little Miami at the head of the gorge, Clifton Mill is one of the largest surviving water-powered gristmills in the United States, its great wheel turning on this site since 1802. The six-story timber building still grinds corn and wheat, and its ledger of pioneer and Civil War history is remarkable. A viewing deck and covered bridge frame the river as it plunges into the gorge below, and the mill's restaurant is famous for cornmeal pancakes made from its own grind. It's a fitting, atmospheric close to a day spent tracing the river that powered it.
