Cumberland Falls & Daniel Boone Country — The Niagara of the South & Its Moonbow
Three hours south into the Daniel Boone National Forest of southern Kentucky, the Cumberland River pours over a 68-foot ledge in a 125-foot-wide curtain that has earned the name 'Niagara of the South' — and on clear nights around the full moon, its mist throws a moonbow, a nighttime rainbow found regularly at almost no other waterfall in the Western Hemisphere. Day one settles in at Cumberland Falls State Resort Park for the falls and its overlooks. Day two hikes the Eagle Falls trail to a facing view of the great cascade, then follows the Sheltowee Trace along the gorge and, in season, runs the Cumberland River rapids by raft. Day three heads deeper south to the sandstone span of the Natural Arch Scenic Area and the plunging ribbon of Yahoo Falls — Kentucky's tallest — before the drive home. Two nights at the historic DuPont Lodge, hand-built of stone and hemlock above the gorge, anchor the weekend. This is far southern Kentucky, wholly distinct from the Red River Gorge.

The falls are dramatic in every season, swelling to a brown torrent after rain and glazing with ice in deep winter. Take time on the lower viewing platforms, where the scale of the plunge pool is unmistakable.

DuPont Lodge
Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps of native hemlock and stone and perched on a bluff above the Cumberland River gorge, the DuPont Lodge is one of Kentucky's great rustic park lodges, with a soaring beamed lobby, a huge stone fireplace, and rooms and woodland cabins scattered along the rim. Staying two nights here puts you steps from the falls and the trailheads and, crucially, on site for the moonbow: on clear nights around the full moon, mist from the falls throws a nighttime rainbow visible from the overlooks — check the park's moonbow calendar and walk down after dark if the timing aligns. Reserve well ahead, especially near full-moon weekends.

Eagle Falls Trail
The finest hike in the park, the Eagle Falls Trail (Trail 9) runs about a mile and a half round trip along the river below Cumberland Falls, climbing over rocky ledges and dropping to a cobble beach directly opposite the great cascade — arguably the best view of Cumberland Falls anywhere. It then continues to Eagle Falls itself, a 44-foot side stream that spills over a sandstone lip into its own pool. The trail is rugged, with rock scrambles, staircases, and exposed sections above the river, so wear real footwear and take the fixed cables where they're offered. Go early to have the beach and the facing view of the falls to yourself.

Sheltowee Trace along the Cumberland Gorge
★ 4.3The Sheltowee Trace, the 300-plus-mile National Recreation Trail that runs the length of the Daniel Boone National Forest, passes right through the park and can be picked up for a there-and-back walk down the Cumberland River gorge below the falls. Blazed with the white turtle that recalls the Shawnee name given to Daniel Boone, the trail threads hemlock benches, sandstone bluffs, and quiet river bends, with far fewer people than the falls overlooks. Hike out as far as your legs and lunch allow, then return the same way. Carry water and a map, as the trail runs long in both directions.

★ 4.5Below Cumberland Falls the river relaxes into a Class II–III run through the gorge, and licensed outfitters based at the park lead guided raft trips through the whitewater in the warm months — the classic way to experience the canyon from the water. Trips typically launch from a put-in below the falls and float several miles of forested gorge with a handful of lively rapids, suitable for reasonably fit first-timers. Book ahead, dress to get wet, and check the season and water-level requirements before you go. Off-season or for a calmer option, the park also offers flatwater kayak and stand-up paddleboard time above the falls.

A second night at the DuPont Lodge keeps you on the gorge rim for another chance at the moonbow if the moon is right, and lets you unwind by the great stone fireplace after a full day of hiking and paddling. Trade trail stories over dinner in the Riverview dining room and turn in early for tomorrow's push farther south. If the sky is clear near the full moon, take the short walk down to the falls overlooks after dark before bed.

Natural Arch Scenic Area

A paved overlook delivers the postcard view within a few minutes' walk, while the mile-long Trail 510 loop descends beneath the arch and through the surrounding gorge for the full sense of its scale. Interpretive panels explain the freeze-thaw and weathering that hollowed the rock over millennia. The forest here is quiet and the trail well graded — a rewarding first hike of the day before Yahoo Falls.

Yahoo Falls — Kentucky's Tallest
★ 4.7At 113 feet, Yahoo Falls is the tallest waterfall in Kentucky, a slender ribbon that spills over the lip of an enormous recess cave and can be walked entirely behind in the dry season. Set in the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area just off the route home, the falls are reached by a network of short, steep loop trails through hemlock gorge, with stairways and a boardwalk beneath the immense overhang. The volume is modest except after rain, but the sheer height and the cavernous amphitheater make it unforgettable. Combine the falls loop with the nearby Yahoo Arch spur if time and legs allow.
