Just forty-five minutes south of Colorado Springs, Pueblo is the working heart of southern Colorado — a river city forged by steel, immigration, and the confluence of the Fountain and Arkansas Rivers. Steelworks Center of the West

At its peak CF&I was the largest employer in Colorado, its mills drawing immigrants from more than forty nations into the surrounding neighborhoods and its rails and rod feeding the entire American West. The museum's archive holds one of the most significant industrial collections in the country, and its exhibits trace both the company's power and the labor struggles — including the 1913-14 strike that led to the Ludlow Massacre. Historic Arkansas Riverwalk of Pueblo (HARP)
★ 4.6The Historic Arkansas Riverwalk restored a channel of the Arkansas River to roughly its original downtown course, more than a century after a catastrophic 1921 flood led engineers to divert the river away from the city center. Today the mile-long waterway is Pueblo's civic showpiece, lined with walking paths, public art, cafes, and plazas, with pedal boats and excursion boats plying the water below. It is a pleasant afternoon stroll that reconnects the modern downtown with the river that made it. Interpretive markers along the way recall the flood and the neighborhoods it destroyed. The channel is especially lovely in the low, warm light of late afternoon.

Union Avenue Historic District
A few steps from the Riverwalk, the Union Avenue Historic District is Pueblo's best-preserved Victorian streetscape, a National Register district of ornate brick commercial blocks built during the railroad and steel boom of the 1880s and 1890s. The centerpiece is the grand Union Depot of 1889, its clock tower still presiding over the avenue that once bustled with arriving immigrants and merchants. Antique shops, galleries, and taverns now occupy the ground-floor storefronts, and the whole district rewards an unhurried wander. It is a tangible record of the wealth that steel and rail poured into Pueblo. Look up at the cornices and datestones to read the city's ambitions.
