Grand Lake St. Marys & the Land of the Cross-Tipped Churches

In the flat, fertile farmland of west-central Ohio spreads Grand Lake St. Marys — for decades after 1845 the largest artificial lake in the world — and, just to its south, a remarkable landscape known as the Land of the Cross-Tipped Churches, where soaring German-Catholic steeples rise from the corn on nearly every horizon. Day one settles in along the lake at St. Marys, walking the canal-era waterfront, historic locks, and lakeshore parks. Day two follows a slow country loop through the immaculate 19th-century villages of Minster, New Bremen — home to the Bicycle Museum of America — and the pilgrimage shrine at Maria Stein, a serene devotional complex among the fields. It is a quiet, deeply local corner of Ohio, all steeples, still water, and small-town German heritage.
