Clear Creek Valley & Lancaster — Sandstone Ridges on the Hocking Fringe

Clear Creek is the largest of the Columbus-area metro parks and Ohio's first state-dedicated nature preserve within a metro park system, protecting a 12-mile stream valley where the flora of the Appalachian foothills reaches its northwestern limit. The Fern Trail climbs from the cool, hemlock-shaded creek bottom into a hanging garden of ferns and mosses on damp sandstone, while the Cemetery Ridge Trail switchbacks up onto a dry ridgetop of chestnut oak and mountain laurel with long views across the valley. Together they capture the two worlds of this landscape — the shaded riparian gorge below and the sun-baked sandstone barrens above — in a few miles of genuinely quiet hiking. Wildflowers and warblers are exceptional here in spring; the ridgetop laurel blooms in June. Trail maps are posted at the Creekside Meadows lot; there is no cell service in the deeper valley.

A 250-foot sandstone crag rising abruptly out of Rising Park in the middle of Lancaster, Mount Pleasant — known locally as Standing Stone — is the single most striking landmark in Fairfield County. A short but genuinely steep stair-and-rock trail climbs to a bare sandstone summit with a panoramic overlook across the entire city and the rolling hills of the Hocking fringe beyond. The crag was a landmark and gathering place for Native peoples long before the town grew up around it, and the exposed rock and cliff faces are a favorite of local scramblers. The climb is brief and the reward outsized — the best free view in the area. Watch footing on the smooth, worn sandstone near the top.

A 150-acre state nature preserve tucked in the hills southwest of Lancaster, Wahkeena is a jewel-box of Hocking Hills geology in miniature — sandstone ledges, a spring-fed lake, and ravines dense with hemlock, rhododendron, and a nationally significant diversity of ferns and wildflowers. A network of easy interpretive loop trails winds past the lake and up through the mossy gorges, with a small nature center explaining the preserve's ecology and its history as a private botanical retreat. It is a gentler, more contemplative counterpoint to the morning's ridge hiking and the afternoon's crag scramble. Note the preserve is typically open Wednesday through Sunday; check hours before arriving.
