Clear Creek Valley & Lancaster — Sandstone Ridges on the Hocking Fringe
A single big day on the quiet northwestern edge of Hocking Hills country, where the sandstone and hemlock landscape that draws crowds to Old Man's Cave begins — but almost nobody comes. Clear Creek Metro Park protects one of Ohio's longest stream valleys, a state-dedicated nature preserve threaded with trails that climb from a cool riparian bottom into dry sandstone ridgetops of chestnut oak and mountain laurel. The day pairs that wild valley with two Lancaster landmarks: the dramatic sandstone crag of Mount Pleasant rising straight out of Rising Park in the middle of town, and the mossy ravines of Wahkeena Nature Preserve. It is the Hocking Hills experience without the Hocking Hills traffic, an easy 45 minutes southeast of downtown Columbus.
