Just upstream, Shades State Park is Turkey Run's quieter, wilder sibling — steeper, rougher, and lightly developed, where ladder-and-handrail descents like Devil's Punchbowl and Silver Cascade reward the surefooted. This is one long, physical day of scrambling, wading, and canyon-bottom hiking, capped by a hearty meal in Rockville or Crawfordsville before the drive home.

Cross the suspension footbridge over Sugar Creek from the Nature Center to reach the trailheads. The canyon floor stays cool and damp even in high summer, and the fern-hung walls rise close overhead. Wear shoes you don't mind soaking — sections of the trail run straight down the streambed, and after rain the ladders and rock are genuinely slick.

Trails 5 and 9 string these together with more ladder descents, boulder-hopping, and creekside walking through hemlock and Canada yew — relict cool-climate plants left behind when the glaciers retreated. This is prime scrambling terrain; take your time on the rock steps and use the fixed cables and rails where they're bolted in.

The ravines here are narrow, damp, and genuinely steep in places; the ladder-and-rock sections demand sure footing and a bit of nerve. Adjacent Pine Hills Nature Preserve adds knife-edge sandstone 'backbones' if legs and daylight allow.
