Hoosier National Forest — Wilderness Ridges, Hidden Cliffs & Patoka Lake
Southern Indiana's only national forest sprawls across nearly 204,000 acres of hardwood ridges, sandstone hollows, and lake country, and this three-day circuit hits its wildest corners in sequence. Day one enters the Charles C. Deam Wilderness — Indiana's only designated wilderness area — climbing ridgeline trails to the Hickory Ridge fire tower, whose open cab yields a 360-degree sea of unbroken forest. Day two goes hunting for the forest's hidden gems: Hemlock Cliffs, a box canyon of sandstone rockshelters, seasonal waterfalls, and relict hemlocks, and the ridge-and-hollow trails around German Ridge. Day three winds down at vast Patoka Lake, Indiana's second-largest reservoir, with shoreline hikes, an eagle-nesting area, and quiet coves before the drive back to the city. Overnights are spent in the small towns near Paoli and the Patoka Lake area, deep in the Hoosier hills.
