Afton Elkhorn Arch
★ 4.6Spanning Afton's Washington Street (US 89) is the largest elkhorn arch in the world — a 75-foot span assembled in 1958 from roughly 3,011 naturally shed elk antlers gathered from the surrounding ranges and the nearby National Elk Refuge. Local craftsmen wired the antlers over a steel frame, and the arch has been rebuilt and re-antlered over the decades as a point of civic pride. It makes an ideal orientation stop and photograph: park along Main Street and walk beneath it to appreciate the scale. Interpretive signs nearby explain Star Valley's dependence on the elk herds that migrate through the valley each winter.

★ 4.8Five miles up Swift Creek Canyon east of Afton lies one of only a handful of rhythmic cold-water springs on Earth — a 'periodic' spring that, in late summer and fall when flow is low, stops and starts on a cycle of roughly fifteen to twenty minutes as a natural siphon in the limestone empties and refills. A gravel forest road leads to a trailhead, and a moderate three-quarter-mile trail climbs to the base of the mountain where the spring gushes from the cliff face. When it is 'off,' the flow slows to a trickle and then, minutes later, surges back to full force — an eerie, hypnotic thing to witness. Early Mormon settlers regarded it with wonder, and it remains the geological star of Star Valley. Bring sturdy shoes and a jacket; the canyon holds shade and cold air even in summer.

Star Valley Temple & Afton overlook
★ 4.9Before turning north, take in the valley's Mormon character at golden hour: the gleaming Star Valley Wyoming Temple, dedicated in 2016, sits on a rise on the edge of Afton and is beautifully floodlit at dusk, its grounds open to visitors even though the temple interior is not. From the surrounding roads the whole basin spreads out — church steeples, dairy barns, and hayfields against the wall of the Salt River Range. It is a fitting quiet close to a day in Wyoming's pioneer south before the canyon drive back toward Jackson.
