Swan Valley — A Lazy South Fork Float, Huckleberry Squares & Palisades Creek
Just over an hour west of Jackson, the pass drops out of the mountains into Idaho's Swan Valley, a broad quiet basin where the South Fork of the Snake River braids through cottonwood bottoms and farm fields. This is the gentlest possible day out: a lazy scenic float on one of the West's great cutthroat rivers, a stop for the valley's legendary huckleberry squares, and an easy streamside amble up Palisades Creek. There is nothing to conquer here and nowhere to rush — the whole point of Swan Valley is that the current does the moving for you while the cottonwoods and cliffs slide slowly past. It's the antidote to a hard-charging mountain trip, a day of slow water, huckleberry sugar, and low-country calm before the drive home over the pass.

South Fork Snake River — Scenic Float
★ 4.9The South Fork of the Snake is the longest free-flowing tributary of the Snake and one of the finest cutthroat-trout rivers in the West, but for a relaxed day the draw is simply the float. Below Palisades Dam the current runs cool, clear, and steady through a corridor of towering cottonwoods and, farther down, a spectacular basalt canyon — mellow water with only gentle riffles, ideal for a lazy drift rather than a whitewater run. Valley outfitters in Swan Valley run half-day scenic and fishing floats, or you can put in a raft or drift boat at the Conant or Byington accesses. Bald eagles, ospreys, moose, and beaver are common along the banks, and the shaded gravel bars make perfect places to pull over and do nothing at all.

It's an old-fashioned general store with a soda-fountain counter, sandwiches, and burgers, exactly the unhurried country lunch a Swan Valley day calls for. Grab a square (or two) for the road even if you don't stop for a full meal; the huckleberry shakes are equally beloved. Expect a friendly, small-town pace, especially in the warm months when floaters and anglers fill the parking lot.

Palisades Creek Trail
★ 4.8A few miles south of Swan Valley, the Palisades Creek Trail follows a clear tumbling creek up a green side canyon toward Lower Palisades Lake. You don't have to walk far to earn the reward — the first mile or two is nearly flat, crossing footbridges over the creek beneath cottonwoods and aspens, and it makes an easy, shaded afternoon amble to work off the huckleberry squares. Ambitious walkers can push the roughly four miles to the lower lake, but for a relaxed day, turning around at any of the streamside benches is the whole idea. The canyon is cool and green well into summer, and wildflowers line the trail in early season.
