Florida Museum of Natural History — Butterfly Rainforest

Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park
★ 4.7Paynes Prairie is a vast, wild 21,000-acre basin marsh and wet prairie south of Gainesville, Florida's first state preserve and a National Natural Landmark. The naturalist William Bartram crossed it in 1774 and described its 'great Alachua savanna' in awe; today it shelters free-roaming herds of American bison and wild Spanish horses, along with alligators, wild cattle, and more than 270 species of birds. A 50-foot observation tower off US 441 gives a sweeping view across the grassland, and the Bolen Bluff and La Chua trails lead out onto the prairie past sunning alligators and grazing wildlife.
